My volvo 480 turbo has never been able to hold boost over 2-3 PSI constant. It would go to ten, then drop down to 2-3 and stay. I asked volvo about a new actuator. They wanted over 200quid, i paid 411 quid for the car so that was out of the question. I decided i didnt need a new actuator, the mechanism still worked, so all i needed was some way to dampen the movement and restrict it to a point it would hold boost. So, i found a suitable sized spring in toothpaste bottle pump. I then took some speaker wire and wrapped it around both ends. Tied it to the actuator arm, tensioned it up against a bracket in the engine bay, then i took it out for a spin. here is the bodge... I took it out, it boosts to 10, and now holds 6-8!! Got too dark to adjust anymore, but i figure if i tighten it up a tad it should hold a tad more! I'm sure its not good for the car, but what the hey, its all good fun

what do you reckon the problem is, is the actuator diaphragm knackered?
One actuator is not so different to another, you might be able to get one off the bay or something for less than £200, the calibration might not be exactly the same but it'll be better than nowt/speaker wire and bed springs.

I did look around for ages on the bay, and lots of suitable forge motorsport ones came up, but they all went to 80ish. Some other T2 jobbies came up, but retro fitting them would have been a pita. I'm hoping to make this a more viable perminant solution. This is purely a mock up I do still look about for then every few days incase something silly priced comes up though!

Yeah I boshed a Garrett actuator on my CT26 Turdblower. Needed to do a bit of bracket fabbing and tw@t around with the armature but it went on. Still untested though...

This made me laugh out loud... Car manufacturers spend millions developing and testing cars, then someone improves the peformance with a little spring from a toothpaste pump and a bit of wire. Go and work for Volvo, you could save them millions!

Good work that man, however I would recommend getting it fixed properly! Nice to see another 480 own on Retro-Rides, if you are not already a user get over to www.volvo-480-europe.org really useful forum. Plus you can get Rich Mod for £80, cheapest 170 bhp you can get.

Yer, I'm on there, but don't go on much, seems far to sloooow moving for me, I'm a child of OCUK I did post this on there I was thinking about richmod, but I'm sure this is going to die before i get my 80quids worth from it I'm happy with refining this for now!

Good work man! I have seen this done on a more permanent basis to up the boost using a spring and indeed, I have done it myself on occasion ;D Here's bodge that i found on a Datsun 160J SSS non-runner I got for spares. When I was stripping it I was initially mystified by the piece of wire tied round the clutch pedal that dissapeared under the carpet. Removal of carpet and seat and all was revealed. The other end of the cable under the floor is attached to the clutch arm on the gearbox. I guess the hydraulic clutch must have packed in. The use of a pulley must surely make this some high class bodging! ;D
