What happens when you unplug the switch?

Has it always been like this or is this a fault that has just suddenly developed? My moneys on a faulty switch, if you unplug the switch all the lights should go out.

dipped beam relay possably? had this often on me Mk4, on that if i had the dipped on the engine wouldn't turn off, had to turn the dipped beam of to get it to stop lol he relay was shorting between ign live and the dipped beam feed so either would feed the other.

right, if I remove the switch and unplug the "plu" no lights light up as expected. Regardless of ignition on or off.

the plug is 8 pins (2 columns of 4) like this 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
if I number them thus 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

the following pairs of pins give me12 volts with the ignition on 1 and 2 5 and 6 with 2 and 6 being the earths
I can also get 12 volts using pins 3 and 2 5 and 2 1 and 6 3 and 6
So I THINK that the problem is pin 4 that should be an earth but is not, the wire for pin 4 is black with a green trace.

I think you need a new switch. If the lights go out when you unplug it then theres something in there making a circuit when it shouldnt. Use your multimeter grounded to battery earth to find the live feed to the switch, then short that live to the other pins to activate the different light circuits, you should find that you can make all the lights on the car work this way. Once you know what pins do what you can check the switch using an ohms meter to work out what pins are making a circuit when they shouldnt. Oh, and make sure you put a ten amp fuse in the line you use to short the pins out, just to be safe.

morning, I've had oppertunity to do some more investigation before going to work (I will leave work before it goes dark). With the ignition off pins 3 and 5 have power when linked to battery /bodyshell earth. With the ignition on pins 1,3 and 5 have power. WIth the ignition off bridging pins 3 and 4 switches the screen washer, bridging pins 5 and 6 gets me the side lights. With the ignition on bridging 1 and 2 gets me dipped head lights, bridging 3 and 4 the screen washer, and 5 and 6 the side lights.

So I from the above I have come to the following conclusion / layout for the plug Circuit Pin Pin Dipped head light 1 live 2 earth screen washer 3 live 4 earth (not the best earth) side lights 5 live 6 earth unknown 7 no volts 8 earth
Pins 7 and 8 both have wires and pin 8 is a good earth, but pin 7 seems to be a dead circuit. Now need to work out how to test the switch using my multi metre, any guidance?

ok, with my multi metre dial pointing to the 200 section of the dial (with the other values in that section going up in value as 200,2000,20k,200k,2000k) I can tell you I get the following readings switch in "off" position pins 1 and 2 - reading over 100 pins 3 and 4 - reading of 1 pins 5 and 6 - reading of 1 pins 7 and 8 - reading of 1
switch in the "side lights" position pins 1 and 2 - reading of 1 pins 3 and 4 - reading of 50 to 80 pins 5 and 6 - reading of 1 pins 7 and 8 - reading of 1
switch in the "dipped" position pins 1 and 2 - reading of 1 pins 3 and 4 - reading of 50 to 80 pins 5 and 6 - reading of 1 pins 7 and 8 - reading of 1
switch buggered?

Looks like it. The switch seems to be switching 1 + 2 the wrong way round.

well thanks everyone, it was the switch / stalk that was at fault, so had working lights for 5 minutes, before I reversed into my work bench in the garage and smashed a rear light.
