right the pedal keeps dropping to the floor, leave it for a bit, it gets some firmness back, but isnt back to normal, the car has recently had: good used front calipers, flexi hoses, master cylinder, nsr brake line, and nsr piston. it dosent appear to be loosing fluid, just braking ability! the osr pipe looks a bit cruddy, but is on the to replace list. i didnt get to inspect the rear flexi pipes(i had good clothes on and it was raining, and i wasnt in a hurry to go anywhere!) my main thought is master cylinder, but as the master cylinder is under 2 months old id like to think it wasnt, how reliable are they and has anyone encountered similar probs with vauxhalls? the master cylinder was replaced with the front calipers to try and remedy this fault, which worked for aprox 2 weeks! but its now returned i know there was a brake thread a few weeks ago but i cant find it!

Might not be bled properly, or the master cylinder might have been damaged during bleeding (I've learnt the hard way about that one ) Can't give any specific clues really, but I just thought I'd throw a coule of ideas in to get the ball rolling

cheers dude, the work on this was all done by who i believe are competent mechanic's I'm just thinking something has been overlooked, ( apart from the osr pipe and rear piston) i just don't understand why the pedal is dropping!

By pedal dropping do you mean it is actually "dropping to the floor" or that the pedal is going to the floor when you press it. Normally if its air you can pump the brakes up if you repeatedly press the pedal. Is it any different with the engine running or off? Which parts were replaced with new parts and which were second hand. If you clamp each flexi pipe and it improves the feel of the pedal then the problem should be after the flexi`s
I had a problem once before that turned out to be a bleed nipple wepping slightly. Another similar problem was on a MK1 seat ibiza and after fitting a new wheel cylinder couldnt seem to bleed it fully so still had a soft pedal this was down to a faulty rear load valve stopping the fluid from getting past when bleeding.

Mk3 Astra brake master cylinders are often a disastra. It's really important when pushing the caliper pistons back to clamp the hose and undo the bleed screw on these cars. If you don't chances are the reverse fluid flow buggars up the master cylinder seals. Also on a lot of cars but particularly this model with it's problamatic master cylinder the best method of bleeding is to simply undo the bleed screws and let gravity do it's job....just make sure the reservoir doesn't run dry.

brakes were still functioning, ish, but not as required, pedal drops to floor with engine running, pumps up a bit without engine running, the front calipers were used, but good/recons, nsr drum cylinder was replaced with new, only old brake parts are the osr cylinder, line and rear drums.
master cylinder has just been replaced again yesterday under warantee, so should sort it.
Cheers Guys
