Just found this site. I love old photos from the 70s. Ah, the enthusiasm, the creativity. Customs, rods, drag cars, all sorts... www.timetraveldvds.co.uk/page4.htmlThe DVDs are supposed to be good stuff too. Shameless cross post from NSRA site but worth pimping it over here too. Some cool stuff to see.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Fantastic, I can remember seeing the ad for these a while back. Never seen one though.
Moulding a sump into the bonnet? Genius!!!
Anybody else recognise the plate on the '55? Rings bells but I don't know why... Possibly seen on a showcar or feature car at some stage? Only thing I can think of. Funny to think it was only 25-30 years old at that stage. Like a 1980 Transam now...

Ahh the seventies, happy days ;D You could Quite happily talk of having Thrush (side pipes ) jack up kits,Slot Mags etc. My fav Mag was Custom Car. I remember there was a feature on Don "The Snake" Prudholme, and I got my older Brother to "sign" the article, then went to school saying it was the real deal Not quite sure about some of the styling in retrospect

I saw the '55 for sale in Street Machine a few years back. It's now a Pro-Streeter that runs 11's.

I love 70s stuff. Some of its a little off beat but who cares. Snoopy (the Cheby morris minor van) is one of my faves. Love some of the paint jobs. Looing at a lot of those cars and putting the registrations though the DVLA comes back with a hell of a lot of dead cars... Shame... I got the oportunity to buy an ex Street Machine feature car from 1982 or so, which was an FD Victor which would only have been 7 or 8 years old when customised. Its called "Evergreen" and its a fantastic example of a late 70s Custom. loads of radical body mods but they actually work on the car IMO. Did the shows getting lots of trophys until about '83 then it went off the road for a engine rebuild and never made it back. I could have had it for £150 about 18 months ago. "Apparently" rust free after a quarter century of dry storage. It was in Glasgow and I was just about to move house. I was gutted to turn it down. I wonder if its still for sale up there?

The old customs seemed to be creative and hands on. I'm taking a wild guess cos I were not around for most of it but i'd expect less drug money, embezled dodgy funds, less thefts, and less gangstering pimping, and last but not least; loans, paying for the work. there seems to to be a closer connection to the older stuff too (antique retro?), whereas kids nowadays in the Max spank circles will laugh at anything old, unless educated. The scenes have seperated a lot from what i see, Custom car for die hard rodders, J mags for performace followers, retro mags for the oldies and open minded youngsters (us), and the max cars modded new cars for show or to pull tarts!

Totally agree, to me reanimation has put it all ‘in a nut shell’.
In the past the ‘scene’ seemed to be more fun loving but nowadays custom car shows seem to consist more along the lines of ‘It’s gotta have ex number of £’s spent on it to be any good (or should that be ‘wick’d’), also vehicles see to be newish nowadays where as in past older cars (10 to 15 year old stuff) would be given ‘the treatment’. Why these days ‘the kids’ only modify new cars I do not know as today a 10 – 15 year old car is NOT rotten, whereas in the 70’s a 10 to 15 year old car would be so thus you would have even more work to do with the ‘Build up’ …but everyone managed!

A mate of mine owns a Mk3 Cortina which was customised when it was almost brand new, I think it was like 1975 or something it was built, and the car is a 1972. Lots of Mk2 Capris were done as Customs when only a year or three old. FWIW the Crtina is called "Satisfaction" for those of you who follow such things.
Back then though the cars were all pretty much all owner built and there weren't credit cards and easy finance back then.
Everythings easy access imediate gratification these days. Your average yoof doesn;t want to wait 3 years while he slaves in the garage to build a car when he can max out a couple of credit cards and have a pro build it in 8 weeks.
Thats why these days its all about the money. Because the guys aren't building their own cars they don't have the understandign of what wet into it or even the creativity. Its all based on the insecurity factor. It must be good it cost lots of money. Whereas people into scenes where you build your own car judge it on the look, the engineering, the creativity etc. not the £££ which went into it.
