Evening, the car is a MK3 escort. The blower works fine, the coolant is up to level with antifreeze in it. There temp guage works correctly in the dash, the thermostat works correctly.
I have just removed the pipe runing from the engine to the heater matrix at the engine end. And the pipe running from the heater matrix back to the engine at the engine end again, and run fresh water through until it runs clear in both directions in case there was a blockage. After getting the car up to temo, the air is still cold, and the rubber pipes running from and to the heater matrix are cold to the touch. I can easily hold them whilst the pipe to the radiator is hot. Am I getting an air lock in the heater matrix system? If so how do I get rid of it?
thanks

I allways half fill the rad, start the car then fill as it runs, usually if the pipes are hot and the air coming out is cold it's a blocked rad or heater vent stuck on cold but with the pipes being cold i think there's more to it, remove the small pipe from the header tank and make sure the plastic part into the header to clear (maybe run a small drill but through it if it's blocked), run the engine and make sure there is water flowing from that little pipe if not i'd susspect the water pump may have lost some or all of it's vanes ??

He's spot on there. I did a polo last week that kept over heating, heater not getting hot etc. Owner thought it was head gasket, turned out to be the spillback pipe to the header tank was so blocked with radweld that the coolant couldnt circulate. I don't think escorts suffer with it but a common problem on a lot of mercs and vw's is the pastic water pump impellers melting and falling off.

Another thing to check is that the heater valve has not got a frozen pea or two jammmed in it, when this happens the water is cooled as it flows over the peas and gives the impression of a non-working heater. Hope this helps

Thank Yougents, you were indeed correct the pipe that runs from the top of the thermostat housing back to the top opening of the header tank was blocked. I have now drilled that out, and if I now squeeze the pipe running from the engine to the heater matrix I can hear (and with an assistant) see the coolent level moving. I have run the engine up and as of yet the the pipes to and from the heater matrix are still not getting warm. But I will take the car for a drive and monitor the situation for a few days. My thoughts are perhaps the heater matrix is blocked. BUT, if the inlet and outlet feeds are on the same side of the heater matrix rather than the oposite like a radiator then perhaps coolant can flow through the inlet and outlet pipes without actually "going into" the heater matrix itself. If that makes sense.

Some are, some arnt depends on if it OE or a pattern one IME so even flushing doesn't work that well, all you can do is keep swapping pipes and try with a garden hose, or fill with coke to disolve the crud, i fit 2 spare hoses to both the out/inlets then run them up above the height of the heater rad and fill one with whatever you are using to disolve the crud and block the other off, then leave for how ever you need to and reflush, saves taking the dash out, not that it's really that hard on the Mk3/4 but it's time consuming

things have improved, I now get luke warm air. I will see if it improves some more. If not will try some 2declogging" agent into the heater matrix itself.
Thanks again for everyones help
