Hey y'all.
The 740's paint is a bit scratched and keyed all over the place so my plan in spring is to get her sprayed up in relatively the same colour (darkish blue) but in matt.
Now my main quiries are to do with the situation. I don't have much of a budget and I'll probably be painting on the street.
So my question to you guys is could I get away with using rattle cans and primering/painting say the front wings and bonnet first before moving onto the other panels on other days?
Or is it going to look absolutely gash?

You can get reasonable results from a rattle can, and you can always wetsand the hell out of it afterwards. If you're spraying outside, my guess would be that the paint wil fly everywhere, except on the panel you're aiming at. Better to do this in summer too, when it's hotter
Re. your budget: in my experience one door/wing/... takes one can of colour and one can of clear. You need to get plenty of paint on there to be able to wetsand it

You can do it but as with all painting preperation is the key.
Id try and do the whole lot at once and make sure that the panels are smooth and grease free. Its a whole lot easier to avoid blemishes than to try and correct them! The other thing id do is if I'm spraying on a dirt surface is to wet the ground first to lay the dust in the hope it will then keep off your paintwork as you apply it and during the drying time

If you're planning ahead, which you appear to be, and are curse word at saving like I am, buy the materials a bit a month. If you're just blowing over in the same colour you should only need to spot prime odd bits, so cans will do for that. Spraying the whole car with cans may well work out more expensive than buying a litre or two of paint and thinner from a paint factor. Guns can be picked up for £20-30 in B&Q, borrow a compressor and if you can't borrow a garage/workshop to work in, get a cheap gazebo and sides towork under. As far as finish is concerned, it's good that you fancy matt because that's probably what you'll get at a first attempt anyway!

Firstly, I'd wait til the weather is better if you want a semi good job. If you don;t have the gear to do a proper spray job, you can do a panel or two at a time, putting on plenty of paint/lacquer, and then wet sand and polish. You need way more material on the panel when using aerosols, the key is lots of layers, so you have enough build to flat down to a nice shine. Solid colours are easier than metallics. If you're doing it the panel at a time make sure you order the paint at the same time, or if buying pre mixed, make sure it's from the same batch as aerosol colours can vary dramatically, batch to batch.

remember you only need to prime areas where paint has broken, good paint only needs flatting then top coat unless your going over red,.

Going over red? only makes a difference if it's a light colour over red solid gloss. Dark colours are ok, as are any colours if it's base and lacquer.
