Quite fetching in the Ghia trim too! This car is an exception though, this ones been cherished and has a pretty low mileage! 'Tinas are still relatively popular, so I reckon you can still pick up ok ones reasonably cheaply.
I'd buy this one just to hear the tyres screech around corners ;D
Actually I'll just watch my professionals DVD's for that...

Christ, those were always cheap too, although I suppose that being an immaculate Ghia makes it dear, if it were in more ordinary condition it would be worth curse word all.

A mate has a mk3 estate in the same fetching colour. 60-odd thousand miles on the clock and it has only ever has a couple of very minor welding bits to it. Sooo solid, and straight too. MOT'ed till November, but about 6 miles put on since last MOT. Its for sale £550! Not only that, but it's in the garage opposite my Renault. Lovely.
We took some piccies of it last week to send to an interested mk3 pervert, but I think I deleted them off me camera. More pics to be taken soon...

I dunno, I reckon that's still a decent price for what you are getting. They way I look at it is, could you get a cheapo one into that condition for less money?

Depends what you're going to do to it really. If you wan't to keep it standard and take it to shows, then that one's ideal. If you wan't an old workhorse to run about in then a decent one's what you want. And if you're going to customise it then I suppose all you really need is one that's mostly all there and solid enough not to need rebuilt before you strip it down. I mean, I think my Imp rally car was a bit too rough, but the donor car for it (my 74 Super Imp) is a bit rough but is ideal, because it's road legal, but it needs tidied up generally, and the paint's bloody shocking, so it doesn't make me guilty to start changing things.

At one time I'd feel guilty for modifying a mint old car but now I don't at all. Now, I'd actively seek the best car I could to start with. Nothing worse then having fix a load of rust before you can start the fun bit of modifying ;D
With that 'tina, if you wanted a car to lover, drop a bigger engine into etc it'd be worth it. Just not having to respray a car will save most people over a grand.

My first Imp was nearly twice my age!

Its nicely done but its not worth 3 grand. I would say 2k max. Its not a GTI so will never reach the upper reaches of cult classic status. Saying that, if you paid 2 for it I reckon it wouldn't lose any more money.

There will always be those who ask silly prices just on the basis of "low mileage" - just look in the classifieds / dealer ads in any "classic" or "retro" magazine. I'm not even sure if this is such a good thing anyway: motors that are rarely run, or only used to go to the shops hence the engine never getting warm can be a bigger bag of trouble than a monster miler (I've had a good selection of both!).

I think the 'Old Skool'/Retro look is en-vogue at the moment - especially with these early watercooled VWs. Early Golfs with the small rear lights and chrome trim I think may even be overtaking GTis in the desirability stakes.
3K seems alot of money - but in context you'd have to pay more for a Type 3 VW (notch, fastback etc) In similar condition. I guess its what the individual is willing to pay - personally if its as good as its describes £2.5K sounds fair, though it would cost you alot more to restore such a car that had led a less pampered life.

He's right there. Long periods of inactivity followed by long treks to shows are incredibly bad for a car, the tyres, engine, oil, petrol and other things don't appreciate being laid up too much in one place, while a regularly used car is able to remove the cobwebs before corrosion, flatspots and such move in.
