Hi there,
Need to know where I can get temporary insurance at my age.
My mini just failed its MOT catastrophically, so I'm gunna have to cut and run and get something else because its really not worth fixing considering I have two others in the same condition.
Ive tried tempcover, but you have to be 18.
I need something to get about in till I find something else. We've got a land rover I could use, but its a case of finding temporary insurance.
Any ideas?

Do you not have a current insurance policy?

Could you get some normal insuance, then swap the cover when you get a new car? Most insurers will be fine about this but may charge a small fee.
Make sure you're not swapping from commercial to private vehicles though, you can't normally do that.
Modifications could also throw in a curveball as always, best to ask lots of questions.
...one last point - if you're going to be on the phone to them a lot, check out 'saynoto0870.com', it's a site that lists the standard rate numbers that companies don't tell you.

It works out to be a lot of £££ if you use temp insurance for any length of time.
My '56 plate MR2 would cost me £2200 a year to insure with Mrs Wilko as a named driver on it (23, with a declarable claim). My insurance on said vehicle (fully comp & including business use which wacks it up a bit) is £900, so the additional cover for her would cost £1300, which is £3.56 per day.
I recently got it insured for her so she could borrow it to go on holiday to Wales for a few days & I used a temp policy - I had a claim on my own policy a year ago against another vehicle, if I have another claim in the next 12 months, I lose my protected no claims, hence I did not want to risk my own policy.
The temp policy I took out to lend her the car for a holiday in Wales provided 5 days cover for about £88 - £17.60 per day, nearly 5 times the daily cost of having her on a regular policy and would work out at £6400 for a year.
I suspect when you come to most situations involving a change vehicles, keeping your regular policy running and transferring another vehicle onto it is nearly always going to be cheaper in the long run than using the temp insurers.

Do you not have a current insurance policy? No, i passed my test on friday, my mini went for MOT today and failed horrendously, thus curse word on my plans completely. Which means i now have to get something else! I suppose i could take out a policy, changing is a faff and they usually charge you a ridiculous admin fee, but its something to keep in mind!

Basically, and you're not going to like this.. it's not going to happen.
At 17, even getting normal insurance is bad enough let alone temp insurance!
About the only way to go temporary at a young age (at least for me in the past) would be to grab the cheapest policy possible then run for a week or two then cancel, but it will work out to be quite a lot. Coverbox used to be the cheapest around and I started a policy with them once with AA breakdown and in the week I had it I even ended up using the AA breakdown to get my car back home again. I think it cost me about £150 / £200 for the week. That was at 19 on a 1990 Honda Civic Sedan 1.4 16v. In comparison I am now 21 and paying £650 for an entire years of insurance so to me looking back it baffles me how expensive it was. Be prepared to pay big for insurance. My first car was a Rover 214 and I paid £2200. I spent days shopping around for the best price and that was the cheapest with Adrian Flux. Adrian Flux no longer use the company I was insured with then though so no idea if you'd be able to get a cheap quote too. I'm with Aviva, they seem understanding for younger drivers who own older cars.
Seriously you've not been driving for 17 years, I'm sure you'll last not driving for a couple of weeks until you can find something else to cart about in.

Ok no problem. I'm fine to use our land rover, saves buying anything else!
To qualify for classic insurance it says on the footman james website: How old does a vehicle have to be to qualify for classic insurance? Normally 15 years, however this reduces for certain specialist marques.
Does a land rover count as a specialist marque?
Its a 1997 defender, making it 14, 15 next january, but i'd like it insured before then!

It possibly would qualify for classic insurance, but you may not. A lot of classic insurers I have looked at require you to be 21 or even 25 before you can take out a policy.

Have you tried NFU Mutual? They seem to be able to insure young people on 4x4s.

None of the bodywork is anything out of the ordinary or difficult / expensive for a Mini so I'd say get it repaired. OK you won't be able to drive it for a little while but with current prices of Mini's it'd be well worth doing even if you don't hang onto it for long. Paul H
