I'm not a fan of the styling of cars from around that period as they tend to look like styless blobs but you can pretty much rest assured it will be dead reliable. We've had some Mazdas and they've always been great cars. I'd leave it as is an just use it. Having a reliable motor like that as a daily hack frees up time and money to spend on other more worthy projects. It's amazing how similar the shape of your 626 is to the Skyline I had of similar vintage...

Mazda is wrong wheel drive though...
Drove it this morning up for its MOT and I'd forgotten how wobbly the handling is - PAS is very light and theres a good deal of roll. A world of differrence from the Celica... But then, what would I expect... I think its best left as it is with perhaps some nice alloys on it to spruce up the appearance. It certainly wants a good polish up!
