I've got 10litres for cleaning parts and I wondered if anyone could suggest the best way to use it. I fancy chucking it in a tub and soaking stuff in it but I thought if the muck stops it from working it would go a lot further if I sprayed it on. Are you experienced?

sounds more like a ointment for a 'downstairs problem' than a degreaser.
ive never used it, why not jsut do as the manufacturer reccomends?

It does sound as though it has certain biological applications doesn't it? The manufacturer recommends spraying on, brushing, rinsing off. I'm 'time-poor'  . If a given volume of the stuff can rip up a certain amount of grease then dunking and rinsing is the method for me. It's supposed to be pretty good stuff so I thought I'd see if folks know. |

If I am not mistaken, this is what a contractor uses at my work to clean down the walls of refridgerated rooms and clean the evaporator coils and the evaporators on our external chiller units.
Due to the nature of the application (needing to be food safe etc etc), its brushed onto the walls in a diluted state. So I cannot give you much detail in as much as how affective the stuff is. I probably have more details (plus Haz sheets etc) for it at work in my email folders...

Hey thanks. Yeah I checked the spec and haz sheets before I bought the stuff. Just tried it out spraying, tooth-brushing and rinsing under the tap, it's pretty effective. It was cleaner before I put the seals in, I smudged grease back over it. Before and after:   I think I'll try chucking 5 litres in a tub and seeing how much grease it takes to saturate it, then probably wish I hadn't and use the other 5 as a spray. |

As i understand it, virosol is used in laboratories to disinfect surfaces etc.
Didnt realise it could clean up grease etc. Would normally use IPA for this type of thing.

lol, I use that kind of IPA along side other products too. Hey Trogdor (been a few years since I've heard that name  . It's a cleaner and degreaser. How good is IPA at removing the really baked on 200000 mile inner-engine film? It looks like it's about 140% of the price of viro-sol (I googled up £28/10l) but if it just wipes that kind of build-up off I might get some. |

To be honest I don't know! We use it to clean microscopes and other laboratory equipment! It cuts through grease quite well, I also use it on car when I want to remove polish/wax and in the kitchean as it kills bacteria very throughly!
Virosol is what some of the labs (microbiology mostly) we work with use to decontaminate the equipment before we service/repair it!
don't know about costs as we have a good stockpile of ipa, but we use a chemical supplier to get our other chemicals, (ether, methanol and xylene)

I dunno if its worth me mentioning, but I checked out the paperwork I had about this today, and it turned out that my cleaning contractor has stopped using Virosol as although it was sold to him as non corrosive, it turned out that it does have corrosive properties, and can damage aluminium/copper over time.

Thanks Ed@AC. Was there anything more specific than that? Like do repeated applications slowly corrode it or does a single application do damage over time if not completely removed? Might have to rinse with the pressure washer and make sure I don't get obsessive over cleanliness  |

I think it was a case of corroding over time. Certainly the contractor had used it on our site for at least the last 6 years, twice a year.
That's how the contractor dealt with it - he was cleaning evaporator coils (basically like a big radiator) and it was sprayed on and then carefully pressure washed off. It had been advised to him that Virosol was ideal for the application and non corrosive, but information came to light this year that it will actually corrode soft metals over time.
Under what conditions this will take place I have no idea (but he is due in soon I believe so I will have a chat to him).
