Hi all, I'm looking for a blower motor with an integral casing to boost air flow through my heating system. It's in an air cooled VW, and I want to mount a fan at the front to draw air to the dashboard area even when the engine is doing low revs (at the moment, air is supplied proportional to engine revs). I'm therefore hoping to find a blower motor with a built in casing of some sort. Most blower motors in modern cars look a bit like this... However, without fabricating a casing, it'll be quite tricky for me to get that to work. What I'm looking for is a blower motor which comes with a casing with input and output connections for the air, a bit like this: Round connections for the air flow are ideal. Also, if the motor is mounted out of the air flow, that'd be ideal too. If it were in the air flow, it'd get quite warm (I hope ) Any suggestions of what to look for in a scrapyard/on eBay? If nothing else, I'm struggling with search terms. I've seen them called 'squirrel blowers' but nothing specific to search for to find motors with casings Edit: A metal casing would be ideal... easier to weld/adapt if the air connections aren't the right size Plastic could work though... Thanks!

Peugeot 106/saxo ones blow pretty bloody well - one wired up on full power really has a lot of kick! They also have the resistor pack built inside them if you want to reduce the power (you probably will). I use one as a super powerful fan in my bedroom in the summer, running off an old computer power supply (form a queue, ladies).

I've got this down at the unit: MX5 blower (removable) and casing. That way, if the blower ever packs up you can easily replace it. £10 of your finest sterling and it's yours. You're welcome to come and offer it up too just to see if it might fit OK?

Source a Series III Land Rover unit as it's exactly what you want. www.roversdownsouth.com/images/series-cool/MRC6246.JPGPic is a bit distorted - the outlet pipe isn't as massive as it looks - probably 3" dia. Metal rather than plastic bodied they are mounted on the nearside inner wing with air inlet though a hole in outer wing. There is then a short flexi pipe that connect to heater matrix. I've binned loads as worthless therefore not finding them on eBay doesn't mean they are rare but rather nobody wants them so not worth trying to sell ! Paul H

and you can use it as a supercharger on sundays ;D actually they are pretty good i've used them to boost rear heating in big campervans wheer the origional fan is so far away from the rear outlets they hardly blow at all.

I'll measure it next time I'm down there. Possibly sometime over the weekend, if not it'll be mid-week next week.

No rush though, the matrix I intend to use has been sitting on a shelf since about April. I did have a vague plan to use a few computer blowers and I've collected three of them now, but they're only rated 2 amps each so I don't think they will actually shift that much air.

Threw out the two blowers from my old scimitar too - same as Landies, nobody wants them! Reasonable size, they have metal casings, and have the speed resistor bolted to the side of them - worth keeping an eye out for a pair if they pop up

Thanks all for the suggestions, that's really helpful. Looks like the Scimitar or Landy motors could be ideal in terms of casing, but I've done a search and can only find one Landy one on eBay. A few posts on owners forums suggest they can struggle to move a lot of air, too. Might try posting on a few owners club forums, and I'll keep my eyes open Bruce, that motor looks like it could be useful if Calamity doesn't want it. Not sure how I'd go about adapting the (plastic) casing to fit, but sure I could sort something out. Let me know

Let me know The problem with Land Rovers is (a) the inlet is on the side of the vehicle so no ram effect (b) the actual heater system is poor so by the time the air gets to the windscreen or footwells it's already travelled maybe 5'-6' - seriously ! They used the lower dash member as an air chamber that has loads of potential for leaks. What I'm saying is don't listen too much on what people say about Land Rover heaters - rather concentrate on the fan which is exactly the same as fitted to a lot of 1960's vehicles. Paul h
