OK, I might be commuting some moderate distance to work if I get the job I'm going for.
Obviously a sensible person would just buy a small modern diesel or something for that commuting duty.
But no.
So...
I thought about LPG on the Passat as it stands but it would probably be a less than ideal conversion on an anaemic 1.6 carb engine.
So...
I could fit a 1.8 petrol injection engine, or 2.0 petrol injection engine from some other VW/Audi and LPG that. The 1.8T seems like the real win here.
or
I could fit the 1.9TDi engine from a Mk3 Polo / Golf.
I know nothing about VWs and the families of engines and the electronics on them.
So which swap is the winner?
Or am I missing something important here?
Ideally I'm looking for a "done in a weekend" kind of a job.
Remember the engine in the passat is longitudinal so I'd need to retain the stock 4+E box I guess.

Ignoring the fact that it blew up afterwards.. I think you should have a read of RobinJI's 1.6td conversionThe process would be the same for a 1.9 AAZ from a Mk3 golf or Mk3/4 Passat. The AAZ is a 1.9td with no nasty electronics to worry about. Only 75bhp but easily pump tunable. I get 50mpg on a standard high mile one in a B4 Passat. Veg friendly too.

Meh, my 1.6 is only like 60 BHP anyway. Cheers for that.
Not sure if sumps or mounts or stuff are different between transverse and longitudinal engines?

Oh balls. I totally forgot about that.. I would expect them to be fairly interchangable by using your old mounts and ancillaries but that's just an educated assumption

I had an Audi 80 with a 2.0 EFI motor in it, that was north-south. I guess that might go in. I'm kinda guessing here though as I've no idea what these engines all are.

You don't have many "weekend" options on your B2 Passat unless you can find an Audi 90/100 of the same era with a suitable doner engine, but these are thin on the ground now!

If i were you... Id go for the 1.8 bigblock lump (straight out of another b2 passat if you can)
They are bloody good engines.
My slamtana had one. 1800 on the 4+E box and i was seing similar mpg to my 5 speed 1043 cc polo.. And it went well too... Easily an outside lane mile muncher..
I think I'm right in thinking CRIS that bought the car off me , Drove it to italy on that engine for a scally rally style affair.

If you can find a damaged 1.8t passat with lpg already fitted that would be ideal lol.

other options: LPG on the carb engine, or convert the carb engine to EFI and then fit LPG. Dunno what the thoughts, issues, benefits are on either of those plans...

TDI is not a good option, it will fit, but it will eat gearboxes, as the TDi has too much torque. 1.8 carb is the easiest and fastest way, like Retrowagen mentioned, the 1,8 (engine code "DS") is indestructable and very good on fuel ... i have a german version of that engine with a K-Jetronic and also 90 BHPs, that is also very good on fuel. As this is getting a bit tired now, i might replace it with a 2.0l from a Mk.III Golf and similar VAG cars from that era ; engine 2E or AGG , the AGG is now in my transporter and is better with torque than the 2E .... i think Stephan Hipwell has made a similar conversion on his B2 ....

R32 V6 Lump or Passat W8 engine surely the only two viable options here........

I would vote for the 2E or AGG but having had a mk3 with a 2E their pretty poor on juice. Would be fine with LPG though

R32 V6 Lump or Passat W8 engine surely the only two viable options here........ i didn't mention these, as they are obvious ;D btw, when you increase the power, you should upgrade the brakes; simply put on the vented discs and pads from a Mk.II GTI, the calipers are the same...

brakes? I've been driving a mates '69 Camaro with a 350 V8 and non-power drums. Those Passat brakes seem good for like 600 BHP as stock...

Don't know - but what about a 5 cylinder engine of that era?

I thought they were hella uneconomical? I'm warming to the idea of a 1.8 with simple injection.

Those Passat brakes seem good for like 600 BHP as stock... well, compared to that it might be true :-) Don't know - but what about a 5 cylinder engine of that era? doesn't fit, as the 5pots have the engine mounts on the chassis rails, the 4pot on the front subframe; you would need the metal from a donor car... also the gearbox doesn't fit, you need a 5pot gearbox, which mostly has hydraulic clutch ; the front panel is also different; it is possible though, but too much labour. Economics aren't as good as the 4pot engines ... maybe a 90 BHP Golf engine or Audi 80 B3 with a central injection would be easier, as most of the Mk.II engines habve K-Jetronic injection, which is sometimes trouble, too....
