1, I have a tow bar fitted with twin electrics, all works fine except there's no fog light wired up for the trailer board. Will this fail and if so will it make any difference if I unbolt the tow ball to make out it not used, which it hasn't as yet?
2, One number plate light works the other doesn't. Going to have to drill the screws out as they are rusted up, just wondered if it will pass with one light?
Cheers

1. I'm fairly sure they will not test the trailer plug - I've certainly never had one checked at various different test stations.
2. I would guess it's a fail, as the whole plate wouldn't be properly visible - I've had to replace one before (out of two).

Number plate light is a fail trailer socket isn't yet!
As from the 2012 MOT changes trailer sockets will be tested for continuity during MOTs. As far as I can see this will be whether or not a ball is fitted as lots of modern cars have removable tow bars. Basicly if the sockets there it will be tested. However for the moment it is not a testable item

I believe so, my zx went for MOT last week and one fail point was lose Towbar bolts, which is odd as I haven't touched the towbar in 4.5 years of owning it, they were seized too !
no idea if they tested the socket though.

Towbar light testing is only for the new type of towing plug as fitted to new cars (13 pin version i think). My local MOT station already has the tester

We have to test the towbar but not the electrics yet.

My local station has the tester ready to use but it doesn't come in till jab 2012 apparently but the rule about removing parts to test items still overides so if the socket is behind a removable cover it cant be tested (like on the new range rover).

Awesome. I'll be re-routing all my sockets to behind the tow-eye covers. Surely an easier job than making them work properly Welshpug, towbar fixing has been an MOT point for a while already, nowt to do with new electrics test. I had one fail a couple of years back, unbelievably I just removed the hitch part, sent it back through and it passed. Wasn't much point to that really.

13 pin style sockets will be tested 7 pin style are checked for physical security (ie: make sure they're not falling apart, and wires are externally ok) 7 pin style are NOT tested on the current, or new MOT, which comes into effect in January www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/MOT%20Inspection%20Manual.pdf

Seems a silly question, if your using your tow bar the lights should work. that said i don't think a fog is required, my trailers are too old to have fogs. If you don't use it, rip it off. why carry the weight and have your car look silly. unless you have to touch park in which case. don't park near me.

Bought the car with no tow bar and fitted one as we are hoping to get a caravan at some point, had the tow bar laying about anyway. Touch parking lol, seems the way off life around these narrow streets, only the other day the mrs polo got a nock, there's blue paint on her bumper and white paint on one of the neighbors cars. confronted him about it and had to end up calling him a liar so the tow bar will have other uses than towing, so glad my bumpers are not colour coded ;D

Yeah the stupid thing though is the testing stations have all had to buy a VOSA approved test device what is wrong with a trailer board?
Oh and it wont stop the farmers around me driving their their more rust than metal tractors towing a trailer with the axle held on with string without lights or number plates

9/10 times it's just poor connections in the socket itself, obviously being external they do corrode badly.
Best bet is just to cut them off and rewire and once your satisfied everything's working fill the plug up with ideally electrical grease(few quid from maplin) or silicon if you've got some lying around, always works for me.
