I have joined the SVO club. With fuel going up and up, and my petrol IS200 going thirstily into the future it was time for a change. Now I'm self employed rather than a desk jockey, I will be doing a month of my old mileage in a weekend, probably 3 weekends a month. So, I've picked myself up an Daewoo Musso Auto TD. This weekend, I popped the first 15litres of new veggie at £1 a litre into the remaining roughly 20litres of diesel. Now runs quietly and smoothly, goes as well as before, and I have some cash and carry accounts around the country so can look forward to £1-£1.10 a litre for a while now. Still have 60 litres in 5 litre bottles in storage so will up the percentage until the real cold snap comes them go back to 50/50 when it gets nippy, but it should run 100% in the summer temps. Bonus, smells like a chippy

What diesel pump ? bosch ok lucas not so, "if" it's a lucas and starts leaking just run 100 diesel and the seals should swell up and stop leaking i do the same meself on 3 motors, i add 5m of 2stroke oil to the mix as well, makes it em run better and keeps the injectors clean and lubed, SVO doesn't lube nearly as well as modern diesel

Old Merc pre-common rail design licensed by sSangyong/Daewoo. Bosch pump, one of the best to use. Some of the owners run 100% in the summer, and either 90%/10% petrol or 60/40 diesel in the winter.

I ran a my old 1.9D Polo on 100% rapeseed oil, slowly building up the concentration to see if anything went pop. Was paying 54.9p a litre from Sainsburys at the time. Would fill the trolley and no one batted an eyelid, although I never wiped the shelves out and didn't take the mickey.

i used to run my transit on 80-90% oil straight from the shelf when it was about 48p a litre. i've recently found out that one of my mates dads runs a chippy. he pays money to have someone take the oil away and recycle it! very tempted to get some kind of van or estate that can run on veg and take the oil off his hands free of charge. i just can't talk myself into selling the capri.

just been round 3 large ASDAS (how many towns this size have 3 large ASDAs), and cleaned out their entire £1 1Litre Crisp'n'Dry stock. Sadly that only came to 48litres which is shocking, brings the back stock to 108 litres, need to add some more before prices go up.
Plan is over winter to run either 60/40 diesel, or 90/10 veg/petrol, or even maybe 80/10/10 veg/petrol/diesel to help with the cold starts if we get another silly winter.

I was thinking of doing this with my last ZX but it turned out to have a Lucas pump Still got 60L of bloody veg oil sitting in the garden too...

Dunno about the price, but my local Asda sells the huge 5 litre barrel things of cooking oil if that is what you're after... not going to be cost effictive to come down here from Warrington though......

I have 60litres of the KTC 5l bottles from when they were £5 a bottle recently, just ordered 12x 1litre crisp'n'dry (£1 litre) 12x 2litre Flora Sunflower (£1.99 2 litres special) 10x 1litre Lesieur Rapeseed oil (£1.19 a litre). Wouldn't have stretched to the Lesieur but I had a £5 clubcard voucher, and a first online order discount of £10 if I spent £50 or more, seemed riude not to. There is actually a guy in Durham on ebay selling a 1000litre IBC for £800 for new but out of date veg oil. Will even deliver for "approximatley £50" nationwide. If I had the storage space and pump ability it would be in my yard.

little update, first 15 litres in a roughly 50/50 mix netted me 30+mpg at £1 a litre. Since then, when it was back down to a quarter tank, I stuck in 55litres veg + 5% petrol. Still all good, fires up instantly little grumbly first the first 10 second then like no different to normal.
And to make things even cheaper, picked up 90 litres over the weekend, from ASDA that was from a discontinued size of KTC GM Soya at 80p a litre.

An easy method to see how liquid it stays is to mix a few examples, put them in bottles and leave them close to where the car stands. It's interessting if you campare the SVO to diesel on say a cold winter morning with -8°C ;D Engines run quieter on SVO, that's true. But mainly because they'r not made to run with SVO. Idealy, you'd tweak the pump & nozzle opening pressure. Higher nozzle opening pressure + a bit advance on the pump will give best results. This is to account for the higher viscousity of SVO and it's effect on the injectors (earlyer opening). SVO also wears out the injectors quicker, so it's a good idea to change them anyway. A (bigger) fuel/water heat exchanger is also a good investment to liquify the SVO better, makes live for the pump & injectors easyer. Bigger fuel lines make live for the fuel pump easyer, especially in winter. And last but not least; put a fresh fuel filter in your boot, SVO is known to wash out any dirt from the fuel tank which might clogg up the fuel filter. In that case it's handy to have a filter in the boot instead of having to call the AA Cheers, Jan (did I mention I miss my diesel merc...? )

TurboDieselWeasel, a lot of the sSangyong club have done some pump tweaks, everything else is fine. I plan on getting one of the local members to do mine for me when I'm passing, basically it is the old Van Aaken Merc tuning that they charged big money for. Tweeking the full load screw, one other tweek I can't remember, and a tweak of the ALDA, + a few degrees of adjustment of the actual pump timing gives much more power and smoothness even compared to diesel, and transforms the musso. Next thing is a little boost adjustment and maybe a nice universal cone filter to get rid of the noise reduction restrictor.
