Well, fixed up some of the worst of the bits I'd messed up rubbing out the freakin clear coat and just wafted some rattle can lacquer over it. Started the buffing up process and in some lights from some angles it doesn't look too dreadful. Whats interesting is the bits I touched in with cheapo rattle can lacquer are much nicer in terms of gloss, depth and clarity as well as colour than the rest of the car which was done in an expensive 2 pack clear coat. I think thats been an expensive lesson in not using that 2K cr@p again. This is what the bits so far look like: TBH it looks pretty rough. Except the rattle can bits (front edge of the wing in the photo is rattle canned) so I'm thinking that I'll have to chance using another MOT station when its done so my usual place doesn't take the p*ss out of me, or possibly re-masking the sod and doing the lot in rattle cans and seeing if that looks better. Meh.

What was the problem with the 2k? Ive not had problems with it, if anything i thought it improved my painting two fold! Was it when you applied it or when you rubbed it out. Ive found 2k a mare to polish by hand as it doesnt gloss up as quick as cellulose, probably because its harder. You didnt paint it when we had the stupidly hot weather?

Yeah, where the colour is good it looks awesome.
The problem with the 2K is that it dried too quick, went on badly due to some problems I was having, yeah, the weather was too hot but I picked the coolest day I could, it was hotter when I did the basecoat and that went on OK - the second time anyway...
Its a total sod to cut back, even with a DA. I spent hours DAing the b*gg*r and still its not properly flat. At least with good old acrylic you can cut it back easy if you fluff the application. And even where its flatted back OK I can't buff a good enough gloss in it -and then theres the other defects in the finish caused by the harsh measures I had to take to flat it....
I think I'm going to rattle can somewhere as a test, maybe a door or a rear wing and buff that and see how it comes up with the rattle can lacquer over the 2K. 'cos the rattle can bits have come up super.
I'm certainly going back to "old school" paints after this, its been a nightmare from start to finish. At least I know I can do a good job with Celly.

Yeah, Vauxhall Rio Verde. The bits under the rattle can lacquer show the slight pearlescent effect off nicely, the bits under the 2K just look like a metallic. Its funny colour, get it right and it looks gorgeous, get it wrong and it just looks like a dull metallic green. Even the factory finished seem to vary a little in this respect.

It's definitely looking good. I think you got way unlucky with the 2K though, I was having massive problems with my glassfibre resin curing too quickly (like 5 minutes) but now the weather has cooled down a bit I have an hour to work with it. It seems just that heat kills the useability of 2K.

heh heh, if it works it'll be one of the few positive things to have happened motoring-wise this year for me.
I did a similar job on a similar car 2 years ago and it took me two weekends. This one has just taken faaaaar too long.
And I still don't have a daily driver I can trust. Buick was working great then started cr@pping out on me again on Saturday...

I know what you mean. the car sales guy where I work has had a few verde astra's in, and no two are the same. credit to him, the touch up he does is always imppecable. isn't that paint hugely expensive because of the ammount of tinters used in it?

I paid £35 a litre for the basecoat.... its not what you know, but who you know. I was told it retails at £120 odd a litre. the price is possibly wrong, but I'll stick to celly anyway

I thought £35 a litre was dear! I normally pay about £16 a litre for decent branded paint... OK I don't use R-M or the fancy Standox stuff, but Lechler is next best thing really. And the colour match is absolutey spot on either on the car or between batches.
I've also heard of people getting stiffed £200 a litre for Mercedes silver and I'm wondering where they buy the stuff? My place mixes up any brand colour you like.
Stick with celly while you can. New paint regs coming up and it could mean tricky times for all the home sprayers...
