Well, the auction has ended and my ebay ID is the winning bidder so once the pleasantries are finalised I'll be the proud if somewhat bemused owner of a 1977 Audi 80 GLS. £87 - can't quite believe it really. Its currently very dusty as its been in a garage for a few years. It turns over but doesn't start according to the seller - not really surprising as its been left so long but hopefully it won't need too much to get going. Its a slush box which I've never owned before - will that require any specialist servicing?? From the pretty poor photos it doesn't look too bad underneath the dust. You can see quite clean underarches etc. However as its bronze I guess any rust has camouflaged nicely. Oh well, I'm quite excited - just got to find a way of getting it home now. Trailer hire perhaps?? Its the phase 2 square light model (called a Typ82) but I'd like to retro fit quad round headlights if possible. Loads of ideas, still no time but at least its something to go on!! Need to tell the wife now! Here's a pic:

Some fresh fuel and a good run through with some Redex wouldn't hurt either, the old fuel in there will have turned to water and varnish by now. Maybe that is why it won't start.

Flush all fluids out, from front to back... Engine, brakes, it's all going to need doing. Take the tank out and clean it properly, or the first time you fill it up all the sludge on the walls and roof of the tank will loosen and clog up your fuel lines, whilst it's out blow the fuel lines out with an air line too. Take real care with the autobox, I can't remember exactly what happened, but when I was in a similar situation the clutches?? had separated or summat cos the glue had perished? There's a grain of truth in there somewhere, but I can't remember exactly what it was that happened after the autobox had been sat for so long.
Barn finds are great, but it can sometimes be a weary first couple of months as rubbers perish, diaphragms split and electrical connections snap.
Sorry to sound like I'm on a downer, just spend more time on it now, and you won't spend as much time by the side of the road. I've learnt the hard way, too many times.
On the bright side, that's a seriously ace motor and a top purchase price to go with it. Get in. ;D

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll certainly be taking my time with it. Don't mind spending on those bits either considering what I got it for.

Nice one, glad you got some storage sorted. I'll hopefully be bringing the car back next weekend, then I can get it cleaned up, check out the condition and get some pics up in the Readers Rides.
Part of me wants to keep it covered in dust like that top pic though!!

Excellent - I love these old Audis, I think its the 'crisp' styling that does it for me, very Italian in fact I look forward to hearing/seeing how it progresses

HOTNESS!! Thats a great link - my Norwegian aint so good but it looks as though that dude restored his 80 GT not once but twice!! Worth the effort though, I saw this on the "OOOF" thread and it made me bid on the bronze bruiser above!! I hope everyone appreciates that the Audi 80 GT was the daddy of the Golf GTI. Just like a parent who spawns an obnoxious little arrogant brat!!
