Hi Retro-Riders!
This beauty is my son's Herald, purchased at the end of last year as his first car. The plan was to get a cheap to buy classic and take advantage of the budget insurance (Footman James quoted under £600/year for a new driver aged 17). The plan went well: we bought the car with MOT and Tax and I drove it back from Hastings with a big smile on my face. Sadly, my son then ran out of money for his driving lessons and the car has languished on the driveway looking sad...we've come to the realisation, as he puts in university applications, that it'll be a few years before he'll be driving it, by which time there might not be much left!
I started it about a week ago (with jump leads) after about five months of inactivity and it fired up and drove (off the drive and then reversed back onto the drive on the other space - the oil in the pics on that side is actually from the wife's Sunny!), although the brakes seemed like they needed freeing up. You will need a trailer to move it.
The pictures tell the story...it's a very rusty example but it's a lot more solid underneath. My son bought a comprehensive service kit from Quiller Triumph (£75) which is included in the price. Inside, there's a MP3 CD player (yes, it works) and a snazzy Mota-Lita steering wheel. As you can see from the pics below the car has a full length Webasto folding sunroof which is a bit tatty, but keeps the rain (and snow!) out.
Our plans were to capitalise on the looks of the car, paint the wheels red, fit some whitewalls and give it a quick slam job - creating a super cool authentic rat-look ride. equally, a coat of matt black would disguise it's crusty nature and give you a cool ride for almost no money (including VERY cheap insurance if you're and oldie like me).
Check out the pictures and pick up the phone or PM. Viewing is welcome and recommended.
