I'm looking for a new car and I suddenly realized I'm far too sensible looking at: A) Renault Clio 1.2 16V Dynamique B) Ford SportKA Sure nice cars, but they are lacking something. Is there anything more retro out there which is comparable in mpg, condition, purchase price and insurance (as these two cars)? Links for sale in Wiltshire area are very welcome.

I will keep the K10 (might even do a CG10+ 5speed swap in the future), but I need an UK reg car. K11 is an option, but I don't see that many for sale on Ebay and Autotrader. Their prices are quite steep comparing that you get SportKa for the same money. Also, the cheaper pre 1998 Micra k11 seem to be extinct.

None of the above (with the possible exception of the Mini) will hold a candle to a modern in terms of MPG. Once you've factored in the depreciation you'll suffer in buying a Clio/Ka though it becomes less of an issue.
Don't discount something modern but sporty....the Ford Puma came in insurance-friendly 1400 form, and will kick the ar*e of all the cars above in EVERY respect, as well as being immense fun to drive.

Thanks for the links. PandaSelecta! The Mini is quite interesting. The Bertone X1/9 is quite tidy too, compared to the 128. Because, I'm an engineer. I have to reject all aircooled VW. It is an illogical approach . Is it true that almost all the pre 98 small hatches are gone to the crushers?

It seems you are set to buy something modern, not a problem but you have to understand there are trade offs with an older car. Until you do, the path of true retro enlightenment will evade you* *This is just a loose justification for me not driving around in a new BMW M3 by now, instead having a sack of old stuff claiming my money.

Not really, I have driven my Micra for 5 years now and it is cheaper than walking. Easy to fix too (if there is something to fix) And I like the idea of driving something bigger rwd and older (like a proper BMW, Jag, Mercedes), but for the moment insurance says no. The Ka idea is pretty much gone now, rust from the inside for a 2003 car? The Clio are a bit more expensive but seem to be better build. Anyone knows a nice mk1 106 or a Clio mk1 with 1.4 engine for sale?

I pretty much echo BrianDamaged's post. Pretty much on the money there. As for the Puma, even in 1.7 guise they are vaguely affordable. They can rust though.
My suggestion is a Peugeot 106 GTi. Will do significantly more MPG than the SportKa, is more practical (boot is wider and takes more stuff) in addition to being as fun. As for negatives, the driving position can take some getting used to, and finding a good example is getting harder (but not impossible either).
A MkIV Escort XR3i and Golf Valver can also be considered IMO, but bear in mind they will need more servicing, something to think about if you are putting the miles (as an example, the XR3i will need oil changes every 6k, cambelt every 25k (30k tops IMO) and so forth.
Beetles IMO are in no way comparable to a moderns. You'll either like a Beetle or won't in their drive to put it simply.
As for other moderns, how about a Suzuki Swift?

Not to mention the fact that it put a huge grin on my face down every country road

Do not buy a MK2 Clio. The rattly leaky sunroof will drive you INSANE. Icebergs move faster.

One word, Volkswagen. Something like a MK2 golf, scirocco, polo, even lupo's are cool and the 1.7 tdi is very economical, if a bit slow and tractorish.
If you want reliable ignore old stuff like air cooled beetles, minis etc unless you want to carry out regular maintenance, not really daily driver material if you want to just jump in and go in any weather.

If you were looking for something like a Sport KA, for example, then you are prepared to spend in excess of four figures on something, right? Cant you consider buying what you would REALLY like to own and offset the cost of insurance with what you would save in the purchase price? An late 80s/early 90s BMW can be had for stupid money, a Mercedes ditto, infact, id wager you would be able to use the remainder of your budget to stick a hefty wodge down for your insurance thus making something bigger and older within your budget and not beyond. EDIT: Old Merc diesels are cheap and will give you decent economy if you run them on chip fat or summat.....

106 GTi are a tad on the expensive side to insure, group 13 IIRC Mk1 MR2 IME, insurance groups are a rough yardstick at best. I have paid more to insure a Gp 10 Escort XR3i Cabrio than I have the 106 GTi, the latter having my 18 y/o sister on the policy to boot. However, ATM with recent quotes I would say insurance is a bit of a lottery!
