I'm in the final throws of welding the outside of my fiat 126 and keep looking at the side repeater holes and thinking how much I don't want to refit them- I have googled the very obvious question but there are so many conflicting answers out there can any mot testers/ savvy people give me the right answer on this one? thanks in advance-

AFAIK it depends on date (not sure if registration or manufacture). Pre 1st April 86 and they can be removed. Post 1st April 86 and fitment / working legal requirement. Relevant part of MOT testers manual - www.motuk.co.uk/manual_140.htmPaul H

seeing as its an 87 model it looks like you need them, so why not try to make a flush fitting side repeater (indicator behind the wing, and a bit of flush plastic over the hole). I don't know how hard to make, but would look cool

Put a small one in the wing mirror if you can.

get rid, if you do need them for a test, make some little brackets that fit to bonnet edge, and fit some stick on led ones, then you can fit them once a year in couple of seconds

My old Lada was a 1996 car and I removed the side repeaters. It just recently passed an MOT like that.

^^ it shouldve been a fail! if there are no side repeaters fitted on a vehicle registered after august 86, there is a possiblity its still passable. IF the tester stands 1meter from the rear corner of the car and can see the front indicator flashing its ok MOT wise hate to think what other things some of the MOTers out there are not even checking at test time

^as usual, just cos it passed doesn't mean it should have. The earlier advice (>04/86) is correct.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

yes it should have , mine doesn't and has not been pulled on it , if they are not there most Mot'ers wont notice (probably ) , if there and broken is a different matter

My tester certainly noticed - I cable tied some repeaters under the mirrors temporarily for the test (I have an '88 Manta with wings from a much earlier car)
Car is off the road for work at the moment and I am fitting permanent side repeaters.

I deleated them off my 89 Passat and it failed the MOT last year despite passing it the year before at the same garage but different tested. I ended up buying myself some cheap stick repeaters and it passed with them and I ripped them off again afterwards.

Deffo should technically fail. I have deleted them on my '89 mini, only 2 testers have spotted it in the past 8 years, I just quickly wire up some side indicators and tape them to the wing if it's noticed.

Nope, as said above, pre 1st April 86 and they can be removed. Post 1st April 86, fitment is a legal requirement, if they're not there, technically the car should fail and be unpassable until they are present. Demz da rules.

as above, pre April 86 is the cut off, i have found summert out though, my car was fisrt registered mid april, but it was built in March so if i ever have any problems i can get through on a technicality hehe also as others have said, if you have a problem or are worried, tape some onto the arch as HC has done or a wing mirror or the likes
