Does the old MOT not become invalid when you take it for a new test?

I think it depends on the severity of the fail ?, I know with my own cars the mot guy Has let me take it away & get the repairs done on the old mot, So long as there is still time on it?

errrr bit of a funny area..... yes the old mot cert is valid till the expiry date
BUT you have had the vehicle inspected and its failed the MOT test, which means the car presently is not in a road worthy state. It is the owners/drivers responsibility to make sure the vehicle is road worthy. Normally you would probally get away with saying "you didnt know" in the event of anything happening, but if those brakes fail for instance and you mow down a old lady killing her in the process................you did knowingly drive a car which was unsafe for the road..............you'd be looking at the cell walls!

It used to be the case that you could only drive it to a "Pre-booked" MOT Station
