I'm going to pick the valver up for the Rocco on Sunday, so I need to start thinking about collecting other parts I'll need for the conversion. One of the areas I need information on is upgrading the brakes... I've heard that I can just upgrade the front discs / calipers to MK2 golf ones as they're bigger, but I've also heard that for this to be effective I need to upgrade the brake servo / master cylinder? Is it worth spending £££'s on a rear disc conversion? Are there any cheap inter-changable brake items I can get from the scrappie that will do the same job? The other area is fuel... Am I right in thinking that the valver (KR) engine will not have a mechanical fuel pump? If not, then I'm going to need to fit an electric one - but does this mean that I'll need to change the fuel tank / get a regulator? Any help will be greatfully received

apparently, my mate is off to the Falklands on the 1st, so I'm removing the 16v gearbox before then and I can get it ready for you to collect from here. I read somewhere that early golf MKI FI uses a second tank with a pump in it that acts as a fuel swirl pot, that should work with the rocco too, if you decide that's hard work and want to go carb, I'd like your FI stuff please , as I want to convert the 2.0 camper to a custom/scrap yard FI setup. Look for early FI saabs, as they used K jet and may contain a similar setup, if not, just use an out of tank high pressure pump.. Brakes, well a decent set of rear discs won't hurt, but I'm pretty sure they are hard to find, you may be able to make mKII GTi bits work, I dunno, I'd reccomend using MKIV golf rear calipers as they are a) better and b) don't sieze like Vag ones seem to love doing!. you may need to fabricate some handbrake cables for a rear disc setup also, or shorten some longer ones. Think No-Rice is prob the best place to as, as they love thier roccos

Front brakes two main options:
256mm (16v) discs using '54' calipers (I think) and carriers from certain 5cyl audi, same calipers as Mk2 Golf 15v, but the audi carriers are the key bit. Getting rare... seem to be fetching £150-£200 on Ebay!
280mm (G60 discs) using std calipers etc and spacers. Or similar using G60/Mk3 calipers and spacers. Apparently 'The Phirm' can do something clever for the 280mm using different hubs, but details I have are sketchy at the moment...
Rear disc setup - straight from a Mk2 Golf (sub £50 for basic bits), can get 16v Rocco cables from GSF (or apparently adapt Golf ones by shortening the guide tubes). The Mk2 calipers are a curse word for seizing, the mk3 calipers better, but the Mk4 ones don't fit a A1 rear beam at all easily according to one person I know who tried and gave up. Last thing - in theory you are meant to get teh correct bias valves when fitting rear discs, but a lot of people just seem to leave the drum ones in there...
Usually recommended for any Scirocco is the 9" servo and 22mm master cylinder from 16v Golf (amoung others) - the m/c are only about £35 new, and finding a good secondhand servo for less than £30 shouldn't be hard (look to the Scirocco Register...). Should be able to bend the existing lines to fit the new m/c. Oh and you will need the 16v reservoir as well (plus helps with space on teh 16 engine conversion)
KR will require the injection pumps and accumulator and lines from K-jet car - these can be fitted to a carb tank (the in-tank pump is combined with sender unit, the remainder if out of the tank) In theory the carb tanks are different, but my injection Scala has had a carb tank fitted for 2 years with no apparent ill effects. As for wiring the pump etc I am not sure - knowing VW you could pinch teh bits from an injection car and they will plug in somewhere...
Best bet is keep a look out for somebody breaking an injection car (one on the Register now as it happens).
Did you ever get that conversion information i tried to send you?
I am still buying up bits and bobs for my conversion... hoping to start some time in the New Year.
Cheers, Phil

Thanks for the info Phil.
What's the difference between the 54mm calipers off a Golf 16v to the ones on a 5cyl Audi?
I think I'll go for option 1 (256mm discs) without the rear disc conversion - the transplant has to be done as cheap as possible...I did considering leaving the brakes as is but just upgrading the servo / m/c...?
I've already got the accumulator and injection pumps so all I'll need is to source a lecy pump...does it matter about pressure rating etc?

Calipers are the same, the carriers are different.
I wouldn't worry about keeping the drums, the fronts do most of the work - I was thinking about keeping them, but them I bought a damaged 16v Golf for £30 ;D
Have a look on No-Rice - interesting thread on Mk1 brakes - 280mm might not be any dearer than 256mm...
If you have in-tank pump, accum. and external pump, you don't need another pump?

I've been reading that thread on no-rice.
I'm confused now about pumps!?!
I didn't think I had an in-built fuel pump in the tank, I thought I had a mechanical one run off the camshaft?

Nope... looks like 16v engine c/w fuel dizzy/hoses/injectors, ignition box/amp/loom
You need pumps as mentioned before, and supply lines.
I have a good link for supply lines I'll dig our later

Certainly can...
Somebody breaking an injection Mk2 Rocco would make things even easier though?

www.sciroccoregister.co.uk/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5632&highlight=Just so happens I am going over to this guys house on Saturday morning (if I get the servo on the Volvo changed). And I am also attending the Rocco Mafia meet on the 27th August (you are going aren't you?). I am quite happy to courier bits if you need? The Register is really starting to 'come alive' recently BTW ;D

No not joking - I don't spend enough time with the family as it is due to working a lot, and with a 4 month old son at home I wouldn't be the most popular person if I went What do the pumps and supply lines look like, as I got this response from oldskoolrich on the Scirocco register: Thanks for all the help Phil.
