The school I work in have decided that they would like to run a Vehicle Technology course. From what I can make out the qualifications available assume that the courses are run in the workplace, or an institution with a fully equipped workshop, ramp, gas analysis equipment.
So those already running/working in garages what equipment is normal, and most importantly how much does it cost.
Also do you know of any relevant specific legeslation\training\certification required for, for instance using vehical lifts.
And of course the head wants this sort of information for tomorrow.

Most garages have a shockingly bad lack of equipment. For a basic workshop set up you'll need a two post and four post ramp, compressor, welder, oxy acetlene, diagnostic scanner (or 6) Oscilloscope, press, battery charger, jump pack, pressure bleeder, transmission jack, axle stands, trolley jacks, air tools, big tool box full of overpriced curse word, radio, kettle, pornography.

Fuel pressure tester, compression tester, high pressure diesel test kit, tyre machine, wheel balencer, tracking gauges, A/C machine. I could go on all night really because no ones ever got all the equipment they need.

Cheers Gents. I have only the vaguest idea what some of this stuff is - ok I know what its is sort of but have certainly never used it and couldn't teach it.

To be honest most level 1+2 stuff is just removing and replacing components. Back when i was at college a lot of the other kids were on placements in breakers yards. Your biggest headache, as always, is going to be health and saftey and enviroment agency. Not to mention insurance.
