Hello
My question is not directly car related, but I have an issue with my air compressor. It had various issues, but mainly the compressor head not making much pressure. I have taken it all apart, sorted a few issues out, but it has a broken gasket between the piston barrel and the first of the head plates.
Now I was just going to lap the surfaces and use a spot of instant gasket, but on putting it back together I have realised that the previous head gasket was 0.6 mm thick. Without it the piston CROWN kisses the head.
What would be the best sort of gasket material to use as replacement. I have looked on Ebay and there are a number of varitions on paper and fibre gaskets of various thicknesses. Any idea what sort would be the most suitable?
Would a standard oiled paper/card gasket work? Or would I need more of a compressed fibreous type?
Ta muchly
Lewis
P.s. sorry for the simpleton question.

It is an old Wolf 2.5hp unit. Unfortunately it is from the time before wolf went bust, so the current incarnation of wolf do not hold spares for it.
The compressor is generally in good order, but decided to pop a number of gaskets in the compressor head.

What about making a gasket out of some copper sheet ?

It may have been CAF originally (compressed asbestos fibre). I'd just use that again as it'll deal with the heat and pressure okay. We use it at work but not sure if we'll have 0.6mm. Probably got 1mm if you get stuck.

Good shout! I have some 1mm copper sheet knocking about, as it happens, so I will give that a crack first.
If not I will try a paper gasket and see how it works out.
Thanks

My last lawnmower (Briggs and Stratton engine) did two seasons with a head gasket made from a cornflake packet. I was most surprised it lasted more than 5 minutes......
Your compressor might well have higher pressure to contain though.

Ratdat, thanks for the offer.
I have a sheet of 1 mm brass, so will have a go with that. If that doesn't work then I will try and get a fibreous gasket material.
Thanks

Well to update, I used a bit of 1 mm brass sheet and crafted a new gasket.
All seems good now. The compressor makes good pressure and fills up about as quick as it did before.
Thanks for the suggests.

Its more than likly a common pump unit, as most compressor companys buy a pump from Atlas copco or another italian company, so if you have any more problems try and find a good air house and they should be able to find a gasket that will fit.
