Hi,
I have never done any insurance quotes on a modified car before. Now I would like to do one on a car that has had an engine swap, new alloys, suspension, added lsd. Now I can get off 40% off all quotes at Adrian Flux so I am wanting to get a quote through them, plus I only need limited milage of 4k.
Now how do you go about it? Do you list what's been done like just say "it's had an engine swap" than in the end say with those mod's it now makes 220bhp?

Best thing to do is phone the insurance company up, I don't see why they would need to know the power its making. Just tell them everything thats been done to it, and I suppose you could ask them over the phone if they need to know the bhp. Elephant let you do modification quotes over the internet, you get lots of boxes to tick for whats been done. www.elephant.co.uk/

Yea, has to be on the phone to get an accurate estimate for the quote. It's the only way unfortunately The process is : - You ring up, state basic requirements - They forward you to appropriate department - They take all your personal details and basic car details and check they can do it - They then confirm all the modifications and generate a quote - If you take it up, they will send you a written form where you must clearly state all modifications to the vehicle. Whilst this form is being processed you are insured for up to 4 weeks regardless. - They will then confirm these details as being recorded. Then you're done! And then you get shot in the back when you want to change car, like I just have. Was going to get that 325i so I could "big-six" it or put the 4.4 in it, alas, Highway (erk) won't insure a BM (standard). Yet they'll insure my heavily "modified" car quite happily. Something odd about that ;D

I normally get the quote from one of the firms advertising in Custom Car, they ask for a rundown of the mods over the phne but then I list the lot on the modifications declarations sheet. This doesn't seem to affect the price, but I would recommend giving exact details and taking lots of detailed pictures for records or they won't replace it like for like.

"You ring up, state basic requirements" Lewis what do you mean by that? I wish you could ring up and state the reg number and be able to use the mods that it is insured under right now.

Take me as a case in point. It's something like this, although I've forgotten now! So don't take it as written ;D "Hello, Adrian Flux how can I help you?" "Hello thar, I'd like a quote on my modified classic car" "Excellent sir and what's your name and age? Do you have a policy with us already?" "No, I'm Mr. Kingston and I'm 20" "OK, I'll put you through to our advisor now..." "Spin me round baby right round round........." "Pardon? Oh I'm on hold!" ;D

When i insured the mini (highly modified) i was able to get a quote from flux and sureterm over the internet. You simply fill out the forms on their site, state the rough modifications you have and then they email you back a quote. Then if its good (as mine was) you ring them up and take it out.
When you take out the policy they will probably send you a MVR (modified vheicle report) in which you can confirm all the mods and then your 100% sure you have the correct cover!
I normaly only tell them the main mods when getting quotes ( tuned engine: xxx bhp or +30% power, stage 2 tuned etc., brakes - disc conversion / uprated, suspension - lowered, sports suspension kit, roll cage etc.
I try and keep it nice and vague when getting the quote, if they want more info then they will ask but normaly they don't have a clue when you get specific, even so called specilists!
Then when i do the MVR I'm a bit more specific to ensure theres nothing that they can use to try and void your policy if you crash (cous lets face it. If you have a real modified car you cant tell them 100% everything you have done to the car over the phone when you get the quote or you'd be there for years!)

Thanks guys, tomorrow I will probably ring about a Kadett. Do people know what insurers are like if you ask to try a few cars for quotes? Do they get all arsey? Only the Kadett is modded, the others would be stock...

It does also depend on the modifications and the insurer.
I've been with Footman James for years...they seem to allow (and almost expect) some modifications. My alloy wheels and lowered suspension just required a mention on the phone - no complicated forms or anything. Adding a Fiat T/C powered Minor to the policy didn't raise any real indignation either. They did however decline on insuring my Herald...but only after a couple of questions:
Me: "It's a Herald with an engine swap" FJ: "What engine sir?" Me: "A V8" FJ: "Is it an American V8?" Me: "Yes" FJ: "Sorry sir we wouldn't cover that"
From that conversation I'm guessing they might have insured it with a Rover!

I'm with FJ on the Nymph. Changed the engine from 875 to 930 and they were fine about it and did not charge me extra. Thing with the Nymph is they ask if its modified. Its a Kitcar! Every Nymph in the club is different.

How queer, just quickly rang up about an MX5 as that was one of the cars on my list. They won't insure me on that til I'm 19. :S

I got a pretty good online quote for my bmw 2002 from greenlight insurancea few forms, then someone sends you an email with a quote. it was reasonably quick too. from what I understand, they insure young'uns too. adrian flux once refused to give me limited mileage on a quote because I was too young for a classic policy. 18 with a pontiac firebird ;D they'd still insure me, but on a general policy.
