Evening all, just seen something on road wars that's concerned me! The rear silencer on my mini is aftermarket and you can see straight through it, does this mean it has no baffles in it? If so... is this illegal?! Thanks thanks

Not all boxes have baffles, some have a perforated pipe surrounded by sound absorbing material and then the outer shell.

as above - as long as it's being quietened to a reasonable level, that's all it has to do

both the boxes on my granada are illegal if thats the case, both straight thru perf tube boxes ;D although, technically all non standard exhausts are illegal as long as its quiet enough to not attract the attention of the BiB you should be fine

Don't Avenger Tigers have a straight through exhaust as standard? Me thinks they just jazzed it up for tv.

Well I did get pulled over in my 68 bug once, was running a stinger (basically a megaphone with no silencing at all and sticks about 2 foot out the back), I said the "no noise regs due to the age of the car" thing so he let me off!! He then did me for having an exhaust sticking 2 foot past the bumper! Lol I just unbolted it, chucked it in the back and smiled at him ;D hehe.

Think this bit does Dan...
(2) Every exhaust system and silencer shall be maintained in good and efficient working order and shall not be altered so as to increase the noise made by the escape of exhaust gases.
Under Construction & Use most stuff could be considered illegal if you get a copper having a bad day.

Yeah, that's what I spotted when I had a look, as I hadn't heard about this before. I'm not sure, but I'd say there's some ambiguity in the wording though, as it says it shall not be altered, but doesn't say it shall not be replaced.

It could, of course be interpreted in such a way that if you replaced the entire system, it would be the condition of the complete system you have fitted that must be maintained. Most legislation is open in interpretation but it's not a point I'd want to try to argue

it probably does have baffles, all baffles do on noisy exhausts is keep the silencer material in place really, the tube going through will be perforated to give the material a chance at absorbing the gases.
