So..... This weekend I was trundling over to Gatwick to pick up a monster set of tyres for one of my Discoveries, anyway (and I'll elaborate later) basically, for what should be a simple 200 mile round trip, I've ended up with 2 dead Land Rovers in 2 different counties, a set of wheels still in London, a 2001 Saab 9something (for sale) and an intimate knowledge of several sections of the hard shoulder of the M3, an empty bank account, high blood pressure, a massive trailer, a trophy for horsey cross country jumping stuff (1st place), odourous pits and only half a bottle of red wine. What gives?

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I rescued my mate today, he started out with the plan of going half a mile up the road for fuel, he ended up with two dead cars, one of which had the bonnet jammed shut, a non functional engine and a flat tyre, the other with a broken drivers door lock to match the broken passenger one, no batteries in the central locking fob and an alarm that wouldnt shut off.

Right, and please bear with me, it's been a long weekend and I've been near a cracking bottle of Shiraz.... Last week I bid on and won a set of substantial 30x10.50x15 mud terrain tyres from the bay of e. Nothing abnormal there, aranged to collect Saturday after I'd been to work. Now several weeks ago I "acquired" a Discovery 300TDi auto to go with the 300 manual my missus already has. It was tired and had a cooked engine, this is a different story so I'll spare you the details, anyway, replaced engine, bish bash and indeed bosh I've been using it for a couple of weeks. (I can hear you Land Rover owners cringing already) No problems! So, I thinks, "well now MonzaPhil, a trip up to Gatwick would be good for this old motor, clear the cobwebs etc and while you're up there why not go on up to Hampton to see your brother, sis-in-law and niece?" Why not indeed. Anyhoo, I suggest this to the missus and she's like "yeah" and I'm like "yeah" so we go. The trip through the New Forest, Lyndhurst, M27, M3 fine so far until 8 miles before Rownhams/Fleet whichever, I don't care the sign just said SERVICES, FURTHER THAN YOU CAN GET.... i175.photobucket.com/albums/w122/ThE_sNiPeRs_PiCs/Retrorides/curse word.jpg[/IMG] See where this is going? Bas£$%D thing overheated, no warning, just went ping, red, steam, hello hard shoulder..... BALLSACKS. Please note, I was in no mood for photos hence the illustrations.

So, hottest day of the millenium, we're getting hot and dusty by the M3, after a cooling off period and a call to bro and wheel bloke to advise of late-ness trundle on for about 2 miles before: i175.photobucket.com/albums/w122/ThE_sNiPeRs_PiCs/Retrorides/curse word.jpg[/IMG] AGAIN! No worries, sign for Hook just a mile away, missusesesesseses family there, phone them, phone everyone, no curse word at home. Bottoms. So we get to a superstore and NO PETROL STATION! Not that super is it? However mineral water is on special so we get 24 litres (just in case) and as I was pondering how to get the plugs out of the thermostat housing and radiator who should turn up but? Yep, a bloke trying to do his shopping quietly but driving a Disco Commercial. "Gimme tools" I sez and he's like " yeah, keep 'em" and I'm like all "that's cool but cheers, have 'em 'back". So we.... and we're off again (after testing it for heat dispersal and cool retention). Back on the road heading to Gatwick(ish) to collect my wheels and tyres. At this stage I was wondering whether getting them deliverd by courier might have been wise.

I actually love the illustrations. Its like teaching kids never to grow up wanting a Land Rover But I feel your pain, breaking down is never a nice experience anyway but breaking down far from home is just a bloody nightmare. (well it is on a bike when you have to push it home lol)

So, M3, M25, hills, roads etc, eye on temperature gauge and all ok, must have been pushing it a bit hard and the steady 60-65 is paying off. Yay We get to Gatwick after the missus nearly has some sort of nervous episode about the un-naturalness of flying and aeroplanes etc.... no worries. Meet bloke (Geoff, SJ4x4, ebay legend) have a chuckle about it, load up wheels and tyres and we're off... Trundle up through Oxschott and stuff toward my bro's place HERE: Get there about 7 I guess, around an hour or an hour and a half behind schedule so really not too bad is it? Have a natter about Land Rover un-reliability flashback to Hook... just so as you don't forget...
