The recent Mad Max thread got me thinking... you guys probably don't see much of the big old aussie tanks that are a dime a dozen here. Here's some to view, perhaps it's worth considering putting some on the same ship that will be bringing over your quota of retro J cars? 1973 Chrysler Valiant Charger (265 HEMI Straight-6 (4.2litres)) 1972 Chrysler CH Limo 1974 Holden HQ Kingswood Stationwagon 1972 Holden LS Monaro 1973 Holden HQ Kingswood Ute

Cool pics! ;D Anyone reckon the XA falcon looks like a big-daddy Mk3 Cortina! Also, Holden is General Motors, right? That explains the resemblance between the LH Torana and the Mk1 cavalier / opel ascona, but what's the deal with the LJ Torana as this bears more than a passing resemblence (at the rear) to a Hillman Avenger? Or are my eyes just going a bit funny?

I learned to drive in an HQ Kinswood ute like that one. Same colour too! Ours ended up with the nose panel off a Statesman which had twin grilles and 4 headlights. Looked really classy. A Leyland P76. 4.4 Litre ROver V8 power. Here is an XF Falcon station wagon like the one we have but ours is metallic gold. It has a 4.1 litre inline six developed from the six cylinder Mustang motor but with a crossflow alloy head and a Weber etc. au.rd.yahoo.com/search/image/view/*http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/trucks/krystal_g/2003/sept/ford_falcon_xf.jpgA Holden Commodore VK HDT Brock modified Ford Falcon XY GT. My brother has a ropey base model XY ute witha 3.3 engine and a 3 speed gearbox. the GT had a 5.8 V8 and a 4 speed gearbox. A Holden HK Monaro.

Cool! Of course a lot of those Holdens shared little bits and pieces (bits of styling too) with our inferior Vauxhalls (inferior because we never got huge engines! ;D) Actually come to think of it the new Vauxhall Monaro and Pontiac GTO are Holdens.

Got my fingers crossed for the GTO. Hoping they don't have to screw it up to meet NA expectations.

I saw a magazine review for the new Pontiac Goat a while back, and the tester was pretty impressed, apparently it was still dead like the Holden and Vauxhall models, and not softened up at all. Actually come to think of it the whole thing goes round in circles, as the Holden Monaro was based on a shortened Vauxhall Omega, which was also to become the Holden Commodore, but that had a big V8, we got V6s and diesels ( ) in the late 90s (I might be wrong about the exact years)

I saw a magazine review for the new Pontiac Goat a while back, and the tester was pretty impressed, apparently it was still dead like the Holden and Vauxhall models, and not softened up at all. Actually come to think of it the whole thing goes round in circles, as the Holden Monaro was based on a shortened Vauxhall Omega, which was also to become the Holden Commodore, but that had a big V8, we got V6s and diesels ( ) in the late 90s (I might be wrong about the exact years) What?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? The original Monaro had absolutely nothing to do with the COmmodore. It was based on the Australian designed and built Kingswood sedan and was introduced in 1968. The Commodore replaced the Kingswood and everyone complained that they were too small and bought Falcons instead. This is an original HK Monaro, introduced in 1968 and available with any combination of Holden motors, from the 161ci six through the 186, 186S, 307 Chev V8 and the 327 Chev V8. This is a HT/HG ( only difference is grille and tail lights ) Monaro from 1969. It had the same sixes but the V8s were different. There was the 253ci ( 4.2 l) and 308 ( 5.0) Holden developed V8s, and the 350 ( 5.7) Chev. This is the all new HQ for 1971. It had a restricted range of six cylinder engines, mostly the 202 ci or 3.3 l. There was also a new model in the lineup. Previously there had been monaro, just a Holden coupe, and Monaro GTS with stripes, hot motors, floor shift etc. With HQ there was also monaro LS which was trimmed out like the up spec Premier sedans. Most were V8 autos wtih things like vinyl roofs and electric windows etc. The HQ also saw the first 4 door Monaro, regarded by many Monaro enthusiasts as not a real Monaro but a sporty Holden. This is the last gasp of the original Monaro coupe. The HX LE of which 600 were built. Basically a facelifted HQ the LE came with the lot, V8, auto, electrics, pwr steer, air con, alloys etc. This is the Holden Commodore VB, 1978 to 1980 then facelifted until 1986 through VC, VH and VK. Opel based but with our own motors and strengthened shells and suspension. 1.9 l 4 pot, 2.8 or 3.3 litre sixes, 4.2 or 5.0 l V8s with 3 or 4 speed manuals of 3 speed autos. This model of Opel Omega was seriously considered to be the 1988 Commodore but was scrapped as being too narrow, one of the main reasons Holden were losing sales to Ford. Instead we designed locally this car, the VN Commodore. These were fitted with Holden V8s or Buick 3.8 V6s. This one has a body kit on it. Here is the next generational change, the VT from 97. It is what the New Monaro is based on. They come as sedans, wagons and utes. Here is the New Monaro in Australian trim. It looks a little different to the Pontiac version because of the grille. And here is our latest Commodore.

Nice selection of cars, those seventies models I feel are more balanced than the American equivalents. Australian design offices at GM and Ford were heavily influenced by American and European cars from their cousins - they simply made them bigger and (in my eyes) better looking. Envy. The South Americans (most Brazil and Argentina) had a good crack too at some nice looking cars: Renault Torino (no European input - I think this was a legacy of Dodge take over) Dodge 1500/1800 aka Rootes Avenger AKA Plymouth Cricket AKA VW 1500/1800! (Volkswagen Brasil bought the factory and continued the model under a VW badge for a few years) You can see the GM influence - particularly the Opel Commodore coupe. Ford Corcel - propbabily unique in design but they only put pissy 1300cc lumps in them! A later Corcel with Audi 5000/200 esque rear styling?

Can you post a pic of the Omega you are talking about? I doubt it shares any major components, The Commodore is totally designed and built here with mostly Oz components. the V8 engines and the gearboxes are imported, but pretty much the rest is made here. Commodore is RWD too. Is the Omega?

This is an Opel Omega. I know there are some major gaps in my knowledge but I know they are related to the Vauxhall Omega, Chevy Omega, and Holden Commodore, and also have a rear wheel drive set up which I believe is based on the same one as the Holden.

That is a VR or a VS Commodore, probably a VS from 1994-97 as it doesn't appear to have a keyhole on the left hand side. That Omega could certainly be built on the same platform as the acommodore. What engines does it have? The Commodore has a 3.8 litre V6 which is just about to be supercedes by a 170kw DOHC all alloy V6 or it has the Chev GenIII 5.7 litre V8 in the same spec as the COrvette.

We do have a V6, but we don't get a V8 model( ), the smaller engines are 2.0 and 2.2 petrols and I think some diesels too.
