Currently running a Volvo 940 estate for (mainly wife) to run our 2 year old twins about.
But it's getting do we don't have to cart as much baby stuff about, and hence don't need anything so big, and as it's a turbo and auto, mpg over 20 might be nice change!
So looking for something cheap but safe and a little different for replace it... But it must be an auto - this is first auto either of us has owned and she really likes it.
Needs to be a fair size, and seeing as a drive it too, must be interesting to drive, and have a little power in reserve, even if not an outright fast 'driver's car'.
New enough to be consistantly reliable and parts available, but pre-cat...
Impress me with your lateral automotive thinking? ;D

Ah good point - not a lot! £500-800... F-in-L is a mechanic, and we tend to swap quite often, and not usually bothered about minor mechanical problems (natural at this price range!), but means parts prices factored into vehicle choice. Last 4 years has seen Nissan Coupe, Citroen BX, Rover 214, Volvo 760*, Volvo 940 - notice increase in size time to start going down again... Perhaps open to something a little more retro... wife is quite a keen driver, but has found having an auto is one less distraction with to screaming monsters in the back (but enough about the inlaws... boom-tish) For example, BMW E28 auto seem cheap but characterful. * My favourite, wish hadn't sold it.

Peugeot 505 GTDT Auto, can do starship milage on the diesel engine, and the 4 speed auto isnt too bad, or go for a GTI petrol auto.
Bit new and cheap as chips a 605, loaded with leather, alloys and the toys, TD or petrol £500 for a minter!
You might scrape a 504 petrol auto for £800
Merc W123 series or 190 ? petrol or diesel

Thanks for responses.
We had our first foray into ebay and autotrader yesterday to give her/us ideas... managed to steer her away from Xantias and on to 10-15 year old mercs with surprising ease. She didn't fancy the E28 525's though :-(

I'd definitely go for an E28 528e in your position.
Lovely, lazy, long-stroke torque monster 6-pot coupled to a decent slushbox that returns decent economy.
Buy a minter for well under a grand.
