Hi,
My brother is wanting to buy something like an Alfa 2000GTV as his first car, one thing that puts him off is reliability. Are they that bad?

Depends on the car and what condition it's in. Not much in a 2000GTV to go wrong.

That's what I was thinking, there isn't so much to go wrong with these older cars. If he gets one I will have to get a Dolly Sprint and race him.

Many years ago, my mum used to have a '78 Alfa GTV. Apart from the unrelenting rust it wasn't particularly unreliable. I remember the rear brakes had some issues when it came to pad changing time and if I remember correctly the head gasket needed replacing at some point but I doubt that's a regular 2.0L twink problem unless someone knows better. The Dellortoes needed a bit of tweeking now and then but as long as you keep it serviced regularly I can't see there being many major problems with one.

Ratdat, Ahh I was talking about the one that ran between 70 and 77. The one you're talking about is the 2000 GTV that ran between 76 and 87.

No reason why an old Bertone GTV would be unreliable.
However, rot free examples are bloody expensive - they rot rampantly, but not quite as badly as the Alfetta GTVs did.
Very simple car - pre-Alfetta platform, meaning no complicated inboard discs on the back and the classic Alfa Twin-Cam lump is unburstable.
If you can afford one, go for it. But keep a close eye on the bodywork.

Budget is £10k for one, so that should be enough for a good condition one I would suspect?

I used one for 8 months as a daily runner, back and forth to Oxford from Worthing one a week, only trouble i had was a flat tyre, brand new trye as well Mine was a 74 GTV2000, 5 speed box and disks all round made it pretty good on the motorways as well. Ian

When you say 'his first car' - how old is he?
It may well be that a Bertone GTV can't be insured if he's a young driver - especially if he's too young to qualify for a classic policy.
Also, I'd say a new driver shouldn't buy something so valuable so soon - if he prangs a GTV it will be very expensive to fix.
