ive got these new wheels for my scirocco but after a trial fitting, ive found out that they hit the calipers. with some traveller rigging (coins stuck to the hub) ive found out i need an extra 7mil-ish to clear the hubs. i don't want to space the wheels out that wide though because i'll end up hitting the arches. my question is.... would it be alright to shave a few mil off the callipers so i can get away with a 5 mil spacer? to me thy look like there's plenty of material there... i'll get a picture tomorrow of the callipers.

i take it your running vw2 calipers? if so, you can ditch the carriers which are normally what hit and fit vw1 carriers instead. this should give enough room for the watanabes to fit.

they're just the standard mk2 rocco calipers, so i guess vw2... and yeah, its the carriers that are hitting. do the vw1 carriers fit vw calipers fine then? and are they the ones on lower spec mk1 golfs / sciroccos? i'm a way down on my break knowledge.

I had a similar problem with some reverse-rims on my Merc. After a bit of time looking over the caliper I took a deep breath and took off about 5mm. Everything still worked when I'd done and my wheels fit on a treat!
It depends on where abouts on the caliper you're going to be grinding - on mine it was fairly obvious that it wasn't near any piston bores or drillings. I'd expect the metal to be a bit thinner in those areas.

Can you not just fit the larger spacers and roll the arches for clearance?
I don't like the idea of bodging brakes.

I don't like the idea of bodging brakes. Strong words from the King of Bodgery. In what way is shaving off a little metal from the calipers a "bodge"?

I've done it in the past on the old mk1 caddy . But the way things are with insurance companys not liking us kind or car people they may not like it if you had a crash . Have a look over on the vw caddy furom they covered this question loads of times with various combinations of vw stock brakes to give you the clearance .

as you have no idea if the internal casting cores shifted during manufacture, not close enough to be a problem as standard, but they didn't expect people to start taking grinders to their calipers..
It may not leak straight away, but if the metal's too thin after grinding random bits off, it will eventaully fatigue, and heavy braking pressure could burst it.
To be sure, get another set of the same style calipers, and cut them apart. Only way to be sure of where holes/etc are. Or.. as suggested, fit the different style of carrier that gets around the issue, with no possibility of failure

it will be the carriers that need shaving not the calipers, so no issues of lleaking fluid etc. however as said get the lower spec carriers(the same as on mk2-3 polos too) and this should allow you to not need any spacers atall, as they don't have the hoop over the caliper.

Right.... you can do one of two things 1. you can grind some meat of of the bridge bar, but depending on your wheels you may not be able to grind enough off. I have heard of people that have cut the bridge off completely but I wouldnt recomend it as the VW1's have a bit more meat to them VW2 Calipers or 2. Find yourself some early MK1 Gti calipers (VW1) which donot have the bridge VW1 Calipers

yeah straight fit. although on my polo i did just chop the bridge part off with a hacksaw as a short term fix and it caused no issues. most mk2 and 3 polos had vw1 carriers. they were a very common brake setup on 80-90s vws so pleanty to be found in scrappies, so no reason not to use them. they are only held by two bolts, so a ten minute job to swap.
