Just came back from looking at a rather nice Sierra Saphire LX and am very very tempted.
Started on the button and runs silky smooth and quite is the 1800 engine. No knocking noises or any rattles on the test drive and has a lovely slick gearchange. Paintwork is flat but should come up with a bit of elbow grease. Floor pans imaculate. Boot floor imaculate. 5 new tyres 4 months tax 1 year MOT. All electrics working. Genuine 23k with a wad of old MOTs.
Ive only found two spots of rust on the whole car. There are a few marks on the offside rear wheel arch that look like they probably wont need welding and the nearside rear arch is a little frilly but doesn't seem to have spread anywhere else.
Oh and the price is £400.
Should I buy it?

What else could you get with that much tax/test for that sort of money? Not a lot I'd have thought. If it looks the part and isn't smoking it's knackers off you'd be mad not to.

The only car I have been offered for that sort of money recently is a shed of a 106. Go for it.

That sounds bob on does that. Does it fit your big car criteria too? Its be a CVH if its an 1800, I could be interested in the engine and box if they ever came up for sale...

Its about 5 miles from my house. I spotted a card in Sainsburys this morning.
No smoke or anything and the engine sounds smooth and sweet. The only thing that I did note was when he first started it was a bit tappy for about 3 seconds. But it was started from cold and hadn't run in a month.

I bought an Identical sierra 1800LX sapphire this time last year, I'm still driving it with no problems at all. Same price, too.
Tappy for a few secs when cold is normal for a CVH.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Does anyone know how easy it would be to retrofit power steering? My second driver has severe arthritis in her hands.

Check the inner sill next to the rear subframe mount, stick your fingers up there often the outer sill looks fine but the inner one will have rotted through. Check the cambelt has been done recently (or get it done) other than that it's a low mileage Sierra get it bought!

What everyone else has said. CVH's have hydraulic lifters, the tapping's probably them rattling before the oil gets to them. Completely normal. And a non-smoking CVH is DEFINITELY a healthy one.
PAS should be adaptable from a late Sierra, but probably not worth the hassle, they're not that heavy anyway from memory.
At the end of the day £400's a decent price for anything with a long MOT these days, it's not even a week's wages. Just do it.

I definitely need a better job too, £400 a week I wish! PAS should be adaptable from a late Sierra, but probably not worth the hassle, they're not that heavy anyway from memory. [geek mode]The non-PAS racks are 4 turns lock to lock so they are quite light just lots of flapping, the power racks are usually 2.8 turns (although there are a few variants). IMO for normal driving you won't need PAS on a Sierra.[/geek mode]

I'll buy it!! Seriously what did you expect? you get offered a RWD, low milage, liked retro with full ticket and some tax for £400 and you expect anyone on here to say "No, its way over priced". Get it bought or tell us where it is so we can And I beleive the cry is normally "Pics or it didn't happen" Here is a pic of a random one from google to get things going:
