A car so great its been made all over the world, right? What is the opinion of the peanut gallery on the Maestro 2.0TD as a daily/winter hack? This rather tidy looking example has turned up in Birmingham and although I can't find any official figues via google various review sites suggest 60 MPG on a run and 45-50 MPG town. Also suggest a capable towing car. If my insurance will call a '93 example a "classic" it could be a reasonable place to drop £400 or so.

That must be one of the last ones registered, yeah?
My mate's L plate 600TD ran fine on veg. I'm leaping to the assumption that they're the same L series plants.

Perkins Prima engines are ace. The n/a aren't too slow and the turbo models go like stink. Some early LDV200s had the n/a version before they switched to the far slower PSA 1.9 units. Just thought you should know! Anyhow buy it if the price is right, they're great fun, easy to work on and (alas) disappearing fast as so many were pillaged for their engines by 'series' Landrover owners.

Its a Perkins Prima diesel according to the internet. Duh. See, I should've known that because while we were rummaging scrappies for these for a mate's Landie we found loads of 600s but had to discount them. Guilty, as above. Apparently loads of engines will fit but they make too much power and torque for the gearbox and diffs in the Series landies.

While I still think that Marina van would be awesome, this would be an actual sensible good choice. I couldn't give you figures but the economy is great and as said, they really can go like stink. And leaving far newer expensiver cars in a cloud of black smoke never gets old ;D
And just look at those scallopped sides. A thing of beauty for sure.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Compared to the 406, this is the retro choice. In the Netherlands they sold the Montego estate as a Rover Estate till early/mid nineties. I don't know if that was the case in the UK, but that car had a lot of equipment (alloys etc) and was available with the Perkins prima turbo as well. Not a bad looker, right?

The Montego estates ran until about 1994/5 in good old Blighty. Alistairk: for something different the Maestro should win hands down over the 405/406. Besides the obvious (Maestro is a hatchback so you'd probably want a 405/6 estate if you need or want boot space) they're two very different animals. This place... www.maestro.org.uk/forums/index.php ...is always worth a shufty through. Excellent web site, very knowledgable and friendly and members and the odd bargain too.

Aye, it was the 405/406 estates I was looking at.
There's something "cute" about the Maestro though!
