Er... don't judge me too harshly, this could well be a stupid question and single wiper conversions are, I suppose, a bit 1990s... but I shall ask away anyway. I have a conventional 2 wiper set up on the '85 Polo I have. If I remove the driver's side wiper entirely and reposition the passenger side wiper, will it still clear enough of the screen for the MoT and for me to see? The passenger wiper arm is mounted in the dead centre of the scuttle, presumably a cost cutting measure for lefty and righty markets so it was easy to swap the wipers either way Do I need to worry about my wipers not being fast enough if I go with the removing-one-wiper option or should I be okay? Should I consider putting a proper single wiper set up from something like an AX perhaps in place of my current motor and arms? The wiper wouldn't park centrally, I have no idea how that's done though I am tempted by doing that and having a chrome arm fitted.

That's very kind of you to say, but there is a bit of method to the madness of a single wiper parked centrally. Eventually I'm getting an external visor and with a centrally parked chrome armed wiper it might just look like a split screen (if you squint, in the dark, lol) because the visor will hide the top of it.

Early seat ibiza had a single wiper too, i nearly used one in my mk2 golf until a mate gave me a storm conversion kit in exchange for welding a patch on his car. Alternatively: home.online.no/~kseland/s_wiper.htmits for a mk2 golf but use the same pricipals for the polo and you wont go far wrong.

you need to lengthen the linkage on the motor to give enough sweep otherwise it'll a - look stupid when you use it (used to see alot of nova chavs that had done this instead of getting aproper kit) b - probably not pass MOT as it's only clearing half the screen c - be difficult to drive in the rain for the reason above
There was a thread about doing a conversion the other week To get the wiper parked centrally you need loosen the motor arm and move the wiper into position. (obviously re-tigthen motor nut)

you need to remove the crank from the motor and get 10mm added into it to give it a full screen sweep

centrally parked wiper will probably be an MOT fail, you might have to make its park position adjustable

popuptoaster: I'd be curious about legislation on the parking position of the wiper. I understood that as long as an appropriate amount of the screen was swept clean it didn't matter where the wiper parked as long as it didn't obscure the screen directly in front of the driver. Of course, I don't know the legislation, so I could well be wrong.

Covered under windscreen obstruction rather than function of the wiper This isn't the official MOT handbook but is largely correct.. www.motuk.co.uk/manual_830.htm
