Hi guys i have a citroen van 55 plate with a 1.9 diesel engine none turbo, its done just short of 110k which for one of these engines is nothing. rite....from cold i can let the glow plug light out and wait even for upto 25-30 seconds and struggles for ages, i can do this sometimes 3-4 times now once the van is started it runs mint, ie no leaks overheating etc...i can turn it off and start it with no probs all day if i leave it for around 4 hours it will start from when the glow plugs go out. BUT if i leave it for around 8 hours or more it starts to struggle again id like to add ive recently fitted new glow plugs and its still the same I'm wondering if the oils too thin, or maybe the injector is shot its doing my head in now, and don't really wanna just keep spending on parts to cure the problem, I'm just wondering if anyone has had or knows about these issues much appreciated

Sounds like a possible injector on the way out if its common rail. You'd need to have a leak off test done to confirm it though.

had this exact same fault on a motor last year!! glow plugs changed just the same, so did a voltage check and nothing to the glowplugs even though the glow plug light was on for its normal time? anyway long story short I traced the wiring(and there is a lot of it in them) lifted up and seperated the fuse box as there are relays under there but nothing amissand lo and behold after removing the nearside headlight i came across a small box that was burnt on one side, turned out to be glow plug relay, unplugged it bought another one with the same umbers on it plugged it in and voila we had power to the glow plugs and normal operation was resumed!! since did another one and the box was in a totally different place!! mind you one was a peugeut and tohter a citroen but they have the same running gear etc? strange !!

Normally caused by a glow plug burning out and creating a short to earth. Normally this will cause the glow light to stay on all the time or flash, but good point, well worth checking.

another one here for thinking it may be the glowplug relay! And just because you may hear it click, doesn't mean it's WORKING either

ford 1.9as suffer from this when they start to loose compression, but TBH it's not a pronlem i've had with the pug 1.9? if there uis deffo power at the glow plugs and they are new i'd possably susspect an injector OR the cold start device/advance.

Citreons have been found to leek air into the fuel filter housing which means you have to turn it over a lot before it will fire up, air can leak through the water drain because the seal fails.
