but I can't help but love it anyway. It apparently it lives somewhere near me but I've never seen it or heard about it until I read it in a magazine. www.csxinfo.net/daytonacoupe/a98/index.htmFrom wiki An AC Cobra Coupe was calculated to have done 186 mph (299 km/h) on the M1 motorway in 1964, driven by Jack Sears and Peter Bolton during shakedown tests prior to that year's Le Mans 24h race.[

Ah, I never knew it was a Coupe. I was always under the assumption it was 'just' a 'normal' Cobra drop-top. Would have loved to have seen it being tested

In a book i have at home on NHRA drag racing a guy called Ed "ace" McCulloch thought it might be a good idea to test his newely built top fuel dragster on the street infront of his workshop in portland, the throtle stuck open and it shot up the street and tryed to join an 8 lane freeway !!! It failed big time, one car ran over the front of it and a pick up hit it from behind ! Try explaining that one to the insurance people !

I know of an F1 stock car driver who occasionally took his racer for a quick spin up the main road at night. Allegedly.

I'm not completely useless, I can be used as a bad example.

The full story on this car and it allegedly being the cause for the introduction of the speed limit was in a recent Classic and Sports Car. That it was driven that fast on the M1 on an early weekend morning is not in doubt. That it was specifically the reason for the 70 limit is not however the case.

My father in law was the foreman of a Jaguar dealership and told me he used to test C & D Type's on the long straight road infront of the garage. For anyone who know's Stoke-on-Trent the garage was Byatt's in Victoria Road, Fenton where Dunn Elm Mill now stands.
