Carlton with 100 to 130hp and 140 ftlb upwards easily achievable with a bit of boost and fuel.. Prob faster than a 2l ? Carlton similar weight to a vectra or a cavalier and there not sluggish with an Isuzu.. admittedly not fast but they are only about 80 HP std..
Maybe a sierra twincam? 40mpg? Si

I used to get over 50mpg from a DOHC sierra (cruising at 55 in 5th) and could average mid 30's in general use - it was a carb one rather than injection. Had an 1800CVH one at the same time which used more fuel than the twin cam, handled much worse and was a lot slower too, so that got pressed when the head gasket let go!
Triumph Acclaims aren't that fab on petrol considering they are only 1.3, I got about 28 to the gallon running round town and mid-30's on a run with mine - would see 40 if you took it a bit slower I would imagine?
A late Citreon BX turbo dizzle would be my choice for a retro motorway cruiser... might break the pre '91 rule by a couple of years, but the look is strictly 80's & the fuel consumption will easily beat your 40 to the gallon target.

Probably not your thing, but how about a VW Scirocco, I did over 80k in mine in 2yrs and used to regularly get 47-48mpg on a run. Gotta be injection though, the carbs are much worse on fuel.
If I was you though I'd just look for anything on lpg, but make sure it has a uklpg cert. or insurance can get funny

I'm considering a proper classic with either a TDi or ford twink on LPG...
I s'pose much of the economy in modern stuff is in the aero which will be worse in a classic

I dunno, Hoops here reckons he saw low to mid 40s MPG out of his Acclaim. I guess that Cappa of yours is a long way off from being roadworthy? I was thinking a 1.6 on a Type 9 may yield the MPG you need and keep you in the cool stakes to boot . Otherwise, like the rest I would say a Sierra, a pre-facelift Volvo 740 TD or 2.3i. IME most K Jetronic cars are fine on fuel as long as you don't have a heavy right foot. Driven normally they are surprisingly good on fuel (well, my old XR3i and Volvo 2.3i were what I considered to be good on fuel for what they were).

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I'd buz off of the bluebird, but I wouldn't expect 30mpg, never mind 40mpg. I guess it would be ok, but not that great. I had a 1.6 LX but no idea what MPG it were doing. our 1.6 bluebird averaged about 35mpg all day long TBH I make a point of not taking any notice, unless the motors obviously labouring or otherwise ill. I spent the whole 6 months complainig how dull they bluey was - what a knob. It was awesome.

That van ticks boxes I never knew I had. If my circumstances allowed cars without a full complement of seats, then I'd be booking my train ticket to Doncaster already ;D

Ali, I'm in the same boat, looking at a Musso or Korando, and veggie. There are a rash of offers from the supermarkets, and some wholesalers who do delivery deals that work out about £1 a litre in the door.
I've just started stockpiling and I haven't even seen a Musso I want enough yet.

Are you looking for space or would a small hatch be fine for what you need? Are you ok with a smaller engine as long as it can cruise on the mway? What speed are you used to sitting at? All of these questions would give us some direction....
