Its a 1500, single carb, turtle paced daily driver. Brilliant in this new-age petrol price crisis, never seems to run out and when you think it's low (the fuel gauge dosen't work, can anyone help, we've tried everything!!), it only takes another $15 to fill up The picture dosen't come close to doing justice to how filthy it really is... maybe I'll wash'er today.

I've always bounced between old rides and modern (ish) ones. Just depends what's runnin g and legal at the time. I don't do a lot of miles so it's not a problem using any of the Datsuns. I've no worries with reliability, my only concern with doing high milages in one of my babies is some chump crashing into it. The only limitation I have is I always have to have something available that can tow my car trailer. I used to pull it with a 1980 Bluebird (910) and the my Turbo Prairie as well as with a Laurel and later a Bluebird Turbo but all wre either too sketchy to tow with or too heavy on juice. A couple of months ago I finally bought something sensible to tow with and I use it most of the time now. It's a 1990 Nissan Terrano R3M which I imported from Japan. 2.7 turbo diesel with auto makes for reasonably cheap and leisurely towing ;D It looks a bit dated as this model came out in 1987 but I really like the styling. Not as poncey as a UK Terrano 2. Next month my '76 Datsun 160B turbo with get MOT'd so that'll see some street use and hopefully I'll have a 100A doing duty for local trips as they are cheap as to run ;D My Terrano...

Best thing about this thread is that so many of us DO use these cars ALL the time. That's one thing that annoys me a bit about the rod scene. So much money and time put into cars that barely get used. I could never justify that!

I've never owned a car newer than 1985..... so my daily's always been a retro. Currently it's the KP, I've owned it for about 10 months now and I've put about 12,000km on it, hasn't missed a beat, best $490 I've ever spent! And before that, my predominant daily was this, drove it daily for about 7 years, including a couple doing a 50km round commute to school and back for 18 months or so. All the while managing to improve and modify it in between times while keeping it on the road

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

My main daily at the minute is a W reg primera which was part exed against my trooper. Normally do around 4-500 mile a week in it. I don't like using the monza too much for work as I don't want to trash it. Still end up doing 200+ miles a week in it. Economy is not bad either varies between 25+mpg for my general work run which is around 15 mile each way on mainly b roads down 18-20 if I am enjoying myself ;D.
The wife is using a 1990 discovery as her main daily at the minute and does around 300 mile a week in that. She doesnt enjoy it as much as the V8 range rover she used to use though. But doing 17,000 mile in a year and averaging between 10-17 mpg meant you were never far away from the station.
To be honest I don't see a big problem with using a retro as a daily, if its well looked after there is no reason why it should be any more unreliable than a modern. A lot of retros are very capable and easy to live with cars anyway particularly the bigger ones a cortina, 70`s or 80`s BMW or merc are perfect cars if you have a lot of motorway miles to do. Even cars such as chevettes are no problem on a daily basis might have a basic interior but with an excellent driving position good handling and a fairly nippy engine make for a good everyday car.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

this is my daily : 50cc, 4 speed 'box, 40mph top speed! Since April I've racked up 1300miles. Reliability is an issue with this bike, but that doesnt bother me too much. When it is going it's great fun, has loads of character and is very cheap on the fuel. I know its not old, but it is 16 years old and I doubt has had a very easy life. I just have to accept that when I take it out I might not get where I want to go - but thats life. the other night i was 10 minutes late for work because the bike ran out of petrol and i had to stand at the side of the road for 10 minutes while she decided whether she'd run again or not. But I can hardly blame the bike for that can i? But i really don't have a problem using it daily. if it breaks - it breaks; thats life. I just make sure i carry my mobile with me everywhere! Thankfully, my parents and sister's are quite happy to bail me out...hehe. (theres been a few times i've had to have lifts to work...) Funny really, I see other lads of my age on their brand new hair dryers, and i genuinely would rather have my MZ over them. Riding the MZ I know I'm riding something special; and I am actually riding it. I've got kickstart, 4 speed manual gearbox, non-automatic indicators - its got it all ( or not got it as the case may be! ) Its hard to explain, despite all its bad points, i just love it and wouldnt choose anything else (given my limitation to 50cc!) when i get my car liesence I don't plan on buying anything new either. all my family have new cars, which to be fair have been reliable. my sister has an 04 reg Focus that has nearly 60k on the clock and that hasnt broken down once. I've often asked my sister why she buys new cars (different sister to the focus sister...), and she says that she buys something she can rely on, and isnt gonna break every 5 minutes, and that she can get in and turn the key every day without having to worry. thats fair enough in my opinion - i think if you're gonna drive an older machine you have to put up with maintaining it and occasionally fixing things. But then that is surely part of the pleasure? Also, the Fiesta advert mentioned on page 4...i saw it on tele last night too. really nice looking car...

As of last Tuesday my daily is no longer retro Having said that, the newly-purchased '95 Camry estate certainly is the equivalent of an older car with 185k on the clock and it only cost £550 so I haven't exactly sold out, and it was bought so Mrs SL can use it too. It'll certainly make life easier in the depths of winter on the lanes I use round here, even in recent rain the Starlet was a bit skittish on standing water. However, having used the Camry for a couple of days I was still amazed by the feel of the Starlet when I drove it yesterday. Sadly, that may be be of its last journeys with me as the eBay auction ends at 9.30am this morning Hopefully this sale will generate a bit of spare cash to get the 240K back on the road, which has been used far too little this year. Looking forward to cruising about in that again.

Yep, mine are daily driven. Ive never owned a car newer than 82 either. I tend to use the ghia daily, i don't really drive the rocco, but thats mainly cos it don't run right and the suspension is too soggy. When its got its new motor, new wheels and coilovers ill probably drive it more. Its nice though, there both kept on the street. I walk out the house and its like, what shall i take, the rocco or the ghia ;D
