Apologies if this is in the wrong forum!
Right, so I've not been on here for a while. I have, in my absense, bought a 1980 VW T25 (T3) with a devon interior, and plumbed in a veeeeeeeery nice 2100 stroker motor, still air cooled built on a type one case with twin 44 IDF carbs, C35 cam, some nice heads, and it goes like stink (for a 1980 air cooled van!). It was a sodding NIGHTMARE to do though, I kept the upright cooling (MISTAKE!), and the engine was built into a Bug, rather than universal case (MISTAKE!) and it has full flow oil system with a takeoff on the pump cover (MISTAKE!). Still, I managed it in the end with some cunningness!
So, my GMC Vandura went the journey after no serious offers, chopped the engine out, sold that on with some other useful bits, about to weigh in what's left.
So, that leaves my yard clear for my Morris Minor to come in for a light resto. On the list is:
Small amount of welding to the sills and chassis
Gearbox rebuild
Brake overhaul & disc brake upgrade
Telescopic shock conversion
Paintwork
Interior replaced (got a donor to use)
Now, it got me to thinking the engine, gearbox and diff combo, and towards thinking about rotary engines. I know the early RX7's were carb'd (next generation were FI and not too complicated, I know that mcuh), single rotor, made a little over 100bhp, and are very compact. The idea is to use engine and gearbox from the RX7, source a suitable diff to match (MK2 Escort is common, but there are others I am sure!), have a propshaft made and have a nippy but not death-trap fast Moggy Minor street sleeper that surprises folk. So, I was wondering, how many folk on here have experience with the rotary engine? I have exhausted my searches on google, been snubbed on RX7 forums, and am struggling to find pics of an early RX7 engine so I can assess where the engine mounts are, how big the gearbox is etc. My thinking is thus: If the work required will not permanently modify the Moggy so that it cannot be put back to stock easily (i.e. no chopping of the bulkhead, engine bay, hopefully just bolt-on adapters to use the existing engine mounts and a modified transmission tunnel which happens to be bolt-on) and the engine will go in with a minimum of fuss, then I shall give serious thought to doing the swapover (thanks to the donor, I have a mock-up template to use).
So, if someone could furnish me with pics, measurements, general experience and knowledge or any other useful information, I would be VERY grateful!
