A funny looking green thing has caught my eye and whoever posted it up on the eBay thread is responsible. 844cc engine, variowotsit gearbox- are they just elaborate death traps??? They have the looks (ish) but can they also have the substance?

They're on my list of "must have one one day". There was a hydrogen fuel cell powered one built in the 70's. Its in the Science Museum store now....

It's Dutch, that's all you need to know... and just about all I know. Great little cars though, I'd love one myself one day.

I was going to buy one just recently however the Sko is being MOT'd today, the above pictured one is MOTd until June/July and taxed to the end of the year, the owner is very friendly and has a Rapid convertible as well He's looking for about £350 ono is anyone is interested. It looks very funky.

I can remember my Grandad telling me about this car - incidentally he owned two DAF Variomatics, I used to sit in them pretending to drive, as they languished in his garage when he got too old to drive himself.... I wonder what happened to them? Whats the Volvo that has the same shell?

Were these also badged as Volvos or did Volvo make a similar car (I know there was a DAF link with the Volvo 440)
When I was a kid we went to stay with my uncle in Gothenburg (Sweden). We drove up to his home country of Lapland in one of the Volvos which had the same wheels. I just remember it was really cold, ice on the inside of the glass etc and the noise of the droning transmission!

I think later ones were, weren't they the Volvo 66's? The 340 was supposed to be DAF too I think, and 440's were build in the old factory after the takeover (not completely sure though).

The Daf variomatics are pretty damn cool... it was the Volvo 66 that was basically a rebadged Daf The Volvo 343 then continued using a variation of this transmission launched in 1976 all the way up to 1990ish (not sure when the last vario 340 was produced) The 300 series, the 400 series and the S40/Carisma (i think) were built in the same factory in the Netherlands

IIRC standard had a renault 4 engine but many were upgraded with the R8 or R12 engines (the same but bigger). Their was a real retro porn coupe one rallycrossed by the 'de rooy' brothers that had a BDA engine ... I'll now go searching for some pics... see here: www.rallydaf.nl/Rally.html

Are these the cars that are driven by a series of belts? I know very little about these! (thats my excuse!) As I understand it, they work with a belt on a conical gear (of sorts), so, as speed increases the inertia moves the belt further up/down the gear, thusly giving you different ratios similar to a pushbikes gears though because there's no physical cog size difference, it's all in one fluid motion. I saw a thing on it quite a while ago, I may have remembered it incorrectly but I'm fairly sure that's the essence of it... ..maybe.

As far as I knoe th drivign experience is something like put your foot down, the engine goes to approx peak torque revs, stays there and the car glides smoothly up to speed. One of my reasons for wanting one is simply so I can have a proper look and see how it all works

I've looked inside a ctx ford box (same principle). infinatley variable gearing between two points. from memory the cones that drive the belt (metal belt in the ctx) move in and out, increasing and reducing the gearing relevant to the input speed. futher than that, my memory fails me
