Got the Buick back after weeks. Starter motor on its own ended up copsting £140! "can't get them anywhere" so had to scratch remanufacture the casing end, dog and some other stuff. Sadly I know they arer available for like $25 in the US reconditioned... This is what happens when people who don't know yanks do work for you.
Flex plate is done at least.
But the car still runs like a dog (although not quite as bad as before) and smoke is still pioring out from under the bonnet, and its not the breather now as that was all clean when I got home.
feck knows where its coming from. I was trying to convince myself as I was driving home that it was just the last of the old leaked oil burning off but its still wet as anything over the manifold.
Bum.

Alistair, What kind of breathers are you using? A friend had problems a while ago with the ussual "dress up" style push in beathers and rocker covers. Kept blowing the dipstick out and had a couple of oil leaks. When we investigated, there was a plate bolted inside the rocker covers to stop oil splashing up into the breathers. Unfortunately the breathers were sitting right down on top of the plate stopping the engine from breathing. Once fixed it actually made a noticable difference in his quarter mile times, so they must have been doing a good job of strangling the engine!

This would be the stock breather/oil cap. Previously it was leaking round the base, down the rocker cover and down onto the exhaust. Now its coming from somewhere I can't see and getting onto the exhaust manifold. Seems to be somewhere about half way down the block towards the rear (where the 4 pipes go into one on a stock exhaust manifold). After a good clean up, blow through and new o ring and all that the breather itself seems fine. It could be coming from the dipstick tube, but its not really in the right area?

Could it still be coming from somewhere higher up and then running down along a line in the casting or something? Also are you sure that the breather is working OK and the crankcase isn't pressurising? If you pull the dipstick out while running is it puffing much?

I'll check tonight. I'm also going to pressure wash and detergent down that side of the block and the manifold.
