hey there all you knowledgeable cowboys and girls... I'm after some help. I'm wanting to 4 pot calipers to the front of my pickup as at the moment i need a gravel pit to stop the thing. what do i need to look for ? obviously i will be buying vented discs to accompany them. what are the important measurements i ned to look for or is it just a case of any caliper but the bracket to fit it will need to be modified / made? Cheers Rob ;D

Right. Basically it's best if you choose a matching disc and caliper off the same car and things are MUCH easier if it's got the same stud pattern or the same hub. So lets say you used a Mondeo caliper and disc on an drum-braked Anglia as an example, a bad example but it's an example.
The stud patterns are the same on both but the hubs are different due to the drum being part of it so you have two options: Either machine the outer part of the drum off leaving just the inner bit with the studs so that the disc can slide onto the outside, or use a hub off another car like an Escort which is a close fit but needs different wheel bearings to fit.
Now to fit the caliper. Take the drum backplate off the strut and you mount the caliper on a bracket on the backplate mounting points on the strut. Basically it's a matter of making up a template, offering it up and then shimming the caliper or spacing the disc so that it is in the righ position in or out.
It's not a difficult job but it's easier if you can use a non-floating caliper and if there are discs and calipers you can steal off a car of the same make with the same stud pattern. Then the original hub can be used etc etc.

Cheers jonny - it does have discs at the front at the mo...
It's 4.5in PCD - Ill check the PCDometer and see....
Honda - Nissan - Mitsu - Rover - Volvo (new)... I might have a word with my local breakers - surely something like a Rover 600 would have a decent caliper ?

no worries dude, and I know what you mean, I am building a KE70 using ae86 parts and it was cheaper to just break my ae86!! (its a J import and a bit battered!)

oh and to add,
You could use the MA61 Supra as they are 114.3x4 and am sure they have big brakes??

Princess 4 pots bolt onto the Marina uprights and work using the standard discs ... how do we know .... been there and done it Now running 3rd gen rx7 front calipers (huge squeeze cast alloy jobbies) and Escort RS Turbo discs certainly not a bolt on job and a bit of faff to get them all squarely mounted and a REALLY major job to squeeze them back under the 14" wheels (clearance ... yes but not much .... a few thou at most in a couple of spots )

Thought Marinas were 4 X 4", same as Vauxhalls? My mate had Vauxhall Magnum wheels on his Marina pick up.

On this note I was wondering what thickness of sheet I need to safetly fit different callipers. Would something like 1/4 gauge be enough? to make up the bracket with?

if its 4x100 look at the brakes on a mk3 golf gti or calibra turbo? otherwise look at some 4 stud bmw's (E30) or 4 stud volvos (think there 4x100) there rather common around most breakers altho i don't know if there 4 pots! usual rule goes bigger the car the better the brakes! possibly a stupid question but did any other production bl car use princess 4pot calipers?
