This was the forerunner of 'Classics' which is now known of course as ' Classics Monthly'.

I remember this and it was awesome.
If you're reading it now the prices in the classifieds will bring a tear to your eye!

hmm, found the old retro mags but not the real early one I was picturing, sure it exists as I can remember a lot of the content - minty green wide arched mk2 escort on the cover, yellow x-pack capri (with image split rims), Yellow 24V Manta 400 rep......

Yes the 'pilot' was a pull out from Fast Car and was the brain child of Danny Morris... The original issue came with a Sticker - we used to joke that there were more stickers in existence than magazines ever sold, as they seemed to be everywhere for a while.
It then morphed into Retro Classics for a while and then finally into Classics. It died a death because of a complete lack of advertising - back then the market just didn't have any big players that would advertise. And as a result there just wasn't enough money coming in. Just becoming a classic car mag meant the publishers (SPL Publishing) could tap into an already made market...
When Retro Cars launched, we did consider our position and even considered legal action... but there wasn't really anything we could hang it on, and so for a while we had 'incorporating Retro and Retro Classics' as a tag line on the cover... it was a little pathetic really!!
Those early mags were bloody good - ground-breaking, really. It had a good writing team, led by a great editor (Andrew Noakes)... it was just ahead of its time, sadly.

I used to have Fast Car kept for me at my village shop back in the day. I can't remember this mag for the life of me though!
I suppose '94/'95 was when I was 16/17 and riding my DT50 so perhaps I'd defected briefly to Performance Bikes by then.
Looks a great mag, shame it didn't survive.

Any chance of some scans (or good photos)?
In the mid-90s, I was brought up on Practical Classics, Your Classic and Classic Car Weekly which were all pinched after Dad had read them. I had to learn about modifying old cars from my Uncle's Fast Car mags, but Retro would have been right up my driveway!

Well, ive just taken some pics of the mag as it was easier than scanning (cheers for the request, it made me look through my stack of old mags ). Have to admit I'm confused. The picture you have put up is if the '1st issue'. Mine says similer. Yours is dated 1996, Mine is winter 1995. How odd??? Now, I'm not a fan of Minis on 13's, but I freaking love the way the yellow one sits. Oof OoOoOfff! Best Anglia colour scheme eva? Why would you want your Golf to look much different to this?

If memory serves... the pilot was either bound in or supplied in a bag with FC. Can't explain the price - but I'm fairly sure that the Bar Code was a fake/mock up to make it look like a proper mag. I believe that a couple of other Classics Monthly 'old boys' pop up on here from time to time, so perhaps they'll chime in with a definitive answer - it was a bit before my time on the mag.

Suddenly the pilot's ringing a bell! Loved that MK1 and have to agree the clubman on Revos is spot on.
That TSW ad is great isn't it? Every project in my mind during that period had Evos on it!

Timeline: Spoiler was issued with Fast Car in late 1995. 'Retro' proper was then launched in September 1996. Magazine became 'Retro Classics' with the January 1997 issue. Last mag with that title was the 'Summer' 1997 issue (effectively the June '97 issue). Mag was then relaunched as 'Classics' in August 1997.
