S reg, 63k on the clock, FVWSH, all mod cons.
I am taking up my copy of VAG.COM on my laptop, but anyone got anything that I should be looking out for on these cars?
It's advertised for £2300, but I was thinking that £2k sounds more like it...
Anyone?
Oh and it's not for me it'f for my mate, who is a wannabe rep...

Clunky front suspension - it takes forever to fix without the main stealer only tools. Sluggish engine due to failing air mass sensor and miss fires due to crappy coil packs

They don't necessarily throw out a code - the best way to tell is if it's dog slow

Regular oil changes - 1.8Ts have a stupidly small sump capacity so the oil gets nice and sludgy very quickly, leading to problems with the top end. Check the alarm, fading interior lights, central locking and windows all work properly - any faults with that indicates a failing 'comfort control module' (water gets into it, under the passenger seat) - 600 quid VAG dealer only part. At 63k miles you want to see either a receipt for a cambelt or negotiate 300 quid off to have one done. (I had mine done for 200 quid, but it's good to have a contingency fund). Check the tyres - they hate cheapies, so if it's on anything with an unrecognised name, budget for replacement ASAP. Rust along the leading edge of the roof where it gets stone chipped.
That's about it, really.
What spec. is it? - you want an SE or a Sport. The 'S' is a real poverty spec and should be avoided at all costs.
Cracking cars, it broke my heart when I sold mine (with 170k miles on it, due to a failing comfort module).
Mind you, I have a B6 2.0TDI SE now, so I'm not complaining.

Clunky front suspension - it takes forever to fix without the main stealer only tools. Sluggish engine due to failing air mass sensor and miss fires due to crappy coil packs Working at a main stealer dealer as I do, I have never used a special tool to remove the front suspension arms, the only grief you get from changing them is from the long top bolt, and if it's really siezed the special removal tool dosen't work anyway! Coil packs will be changed free of charge under warrenty if they're not to the latest spec (regardless of age) Water leaks in from the pollen filter housing causing corrosion in the grey multi plug in the passenger kick panel, LONG before getting into the convieniance control unit. To cure for good remove battery and throw away both bulkhead drain grommets then remove wipers and scuttle trim, remove pollen filter housing and reseal with sealing cord. Carpet can be removed and dried if required, Allow a day, but after a while you can stip one in about an hour clean multiplug and refit.(new wires are required occasionly) Door locks can fail and sometimes refuse to open at all. Early cambelt tensioners are curse word and should have been changed to modified parts by now if still in the dealer network. Fred in the shed probably wouldn't know this Oil strainers get blocked and can cause oil starvation if they're not removed and cleaned/replaced

Outstanding folks thanks for all the replied.
We went last night and gave it a good going over..
The Interior and the exterior were mint and it went very well indeed (Although my mate is up for a remap to 225bhp)
The timing belt has not been done and we got a couple of hundred off the price to get that done. VAG.COM threw up one fault about the turbo soleniod valve?? don't know what that is.
10 Months mot and 5 months tax, £2300...Sounds about right....
It's an SE, and has all the toys. It does look pretty basic, compared to the last of the run out Passats, but it adds to it's charm. Nice price considering that 8 years ago it was a £20k car..
Thanks for the help again guys much appriciated..

Check the oil pump as well. The 1.8T is notorious for oil pump failure (so much so they even ended up extending the guarantee on it in North America). Like Twinspark said, the sump capacity is way too small for the engine, so keep it in good oil regularly.

Coolio - I've only ever actually seen the job done once - I was exceptionally pleased to not have to go near the thing as the long top bolts were indeed completely seized ;D
