So following on from my recent autosolo fun and a strong smell of petrol when giving it some beans on tight corners....... I spent the morning digging out a replacement tank from the back of my garage loft....... It's actually a Carlton Estate tank but it fits a Monza and it's been up there a few years ;D ( broke one a while ago and it had a very good tank (suspected a recent replacement) so I threw it in the loft thinking I know I will need one one day!! Once down on the deck I got the zip wheel out and removed all the surface rust (not much in all honesty) and hung it up in the air - de-greased it and gave it a coat of hamerite silver (cos it was to hand!!) Then while that was drying I went and dropped the old tank off the monza - Bolts and nuts already having been giver a dose of plus gas over several pervious days. Now I'd run the tank down to the red so shouldn't be too much petrol in it (wrong) and as I undid the last strap the bloody thing came down on me chest!!! As I'm lying there I can see the top of the tank and it's not rotten as I expected - nope but the vent tube to the filler neck has a 5 inch split in it!!!! I had to drain 25L out of the tank to empty it!!! So tommorrow's fun and games will be - Undersealing the rear floor pan (it's a bit scabby above the tank) - Sourcing some suitable new vent tubing or that will stop play - Fitting the replacement painted tank And seeing as the back ends in the air I'll change the oil in the diff (if there is still any left in it!!!)

Yeah - It's always had a wafty old guage and I have never successfully ran it out of fuel (so I kew their would be a gallon or two in it but 5 was a shock!!!) but I'm planning of fitting the new tank with the sender unit in it so hopefully it will be a bit more accurate!!!

It's been one of those days To fit a Carlton estate fuel tank to a Monza you need to cut the fixed fuel neck off the Monza tank and using a suitable rubber hose join it to the Estate tank That was my first problem - the fuel necks is bigger than most hoses stocked at my local parts factor..... Go over it by borrowing a bit from another car!!! Next was a trip out to get suitable hose for the breather system Both Monza and Carlton have a mixture of 8mm and 6mm breather hose and it all has to be tied/T'd in together!! Then it has to be routed round so it isn't squeezed when you bolt the tank up!!! Finally I found my main tank to fuel pump hose was starting to crack so had to go out again to source a new bit of 1/2" Fuel pipe......... Using coolant hose should only ever be a temporary emergency option as the insides break up and clog the pump & filter Anyway it's all bolted up now - tommorrow I'll fill her up slowly and see if it's leak free It's certainly not leaking with the 25L I took out put back in it The guage now reads just over 1/4 of a tank so looks like this guage/sender unit combo doesn't lie quite as badly as the previous one ;D Oh and it's silver cos thats what I had to hand!!

Oh and I did get the Diff oil changed
1.1 Litres came out.........
It took 1.5L to refill to level
But I didn't think that loss in 5 years was too bad ;D

Quick update 50L added to what I put back and no leaks have appeared on right or left hand corners.......
Last tank worked out at 16mpg so there was quite a financial incentive to fix it

shiney. seems like a bit of a faff on with pipes tho. You are so right there..... The trouble is the tank is long and flat with a big raised section on one side - if tou block off all the breather pipes when you go to fill it the low part of the tank burps and the fuel flies back out the filler neck - expensive - wastefull - messy I blocked all the breathers up on a previous monza with tank problems and filling it up was a pain in the a r s e so it wasn't an option with this one! Anyway been out for a drive (blast) with it tonight and the guage still says full despite 45miles covered - previously that would have been enough to get it to 3/4 of the guage so either - I have no leaks or - I still have leaks but the sender/guage combination is much more generous One thing is for sure I don't smell fuel on corners any more so that has to be a good sign ;D Time will tell

Both Monza and Carlton have a mixture of 8mm and 6mm breather hose and it all has to be tied/T'd in together!! am I reading this right? it sounds as tho you have to connect at least one 6mm pipe and one 8mm pipe onto one union. what a pain, 'specially if you break the union. I have holes in my 02 tank, went to get the spare from work, washed it out, and thats got holes in to what silver paint did you use? I used dulux aluminium trade paint on the capri, its lasted well. available from KB's.

Well it's a bit odd really I think it's designed to have the 2 8mm vent pipes tied to gether and the 2 6mm vent pipes tied together but however I looked at it the pipes were gonna foul the chassis rails if they went anything like direct route So in the end I joined the 2 lower ones 8mm and 6mm to the 6mm top one so on T piece and a step down adaptor I then joined the remaining upper 8mm straight to the filler neck Seems to work fine....... I was gonna keep the original tank as another spare seeing as it looked sound but I had a little dig with a screwdriver round the top by the vent pipes and I went straight thro the tank!!!! So it's been skipped!! I have holes in my 02 tank, went to get the spare from work, washed it out, and thats got holes in to A R S E - Are they NLS or just silly expensive - I could have bought a brand new Carlton estate tank off ebay for £36 plus £9 postage but the spare I kept was virtually new anyway! [what silver paint did you use? I used dulux aluminium trade paint on the capri, its lasted well. available from KB's. Hammerite - smooth - it was left over from my mixing session with a large tin of black when I colour coded my roll cage at Le Mans!!

I'm messing with the breather hoses on my Manta at the moment having had some leaks fixed, but can't remember where they came off. Presumabley they just go from high points which will have air trapped in them up to the top of the filler neck or somewhere? Did you find your breather hoses at a motor factor in the end? I'm struggling to find anyone that does it.

GRP to the rescue, I think!

Yeah thats it - link each low one to a high point and it works just fine Did you find your breather hoses at a motor factor in the end? I'm struggling to find anyone that does it. Yep off the shelf 8mm Fuel Line for the fat ones and 6mm fuel line for the thin ones

BC, mate. That Monza of yours is a beast! I absolutely love it! If I had the money, I'd try something like that... I'm Thank you - I like it - it'll never be finished but it's getting much closer now - the black bonnet really sets it off!!!
