I've sprayed some metallic base coat onto a grille - the next day, I came to flat it off a bit and put lacquer on top, and it's still soft? The only metallic colour I've done is a base-coat on my old Whizzkid (metallic blue), and it dried in seconds. Is there any reason why this is still soft?

ive had very slow drying base coat before due to temperature being to cold and also alot of moisture in the air! not good for setting solvents!also with basecoat you don't need to flat it off to laquer it you can wait until its just tack/touch dry then clear coat it, always done it this way, but youve got to lay your basecoat down to a good standard!

Hardener, not with 1k. (Although I've seen it said that adding a little 2k hardener to 1k extends the time window for clearing with 2k clear. But that's another thing totally).
Guessing you spraygunned it, so presumably in a room temp-ish place? Unless it went on thickisk and has softened primer underneath, it should flash quickly and be ready for clear.
Want to clear pretty soon so it bonds well, as ^, do mine within the hour.
As above, plus don't sand metallic/pearl, it'll be a mess, slices and exposes the particles and doesn't look good.

Ah yes. I've seen paint failing to dry when there is a reaction going on.
1k paint shouldn't need hardner but I don't think you said you were using 1k?
If you put 1k over 2k then you could see a reaction and cracking.

You havent used water based have you???
Never known solvent basecoat to stay soft even when its layed on and temps are quite low unless it has moisture contamination!

He said basecoat, which would usually be taken to mean 1k acrylic, but could've not meant it in the usual way tis true.
1k doesn't have hardener at all, it's solvent based same as celly. There's drying accellerators for synth enamel / knacker lacquer though.
1k can easily soften lower layers of 1k because of the heavy solvent content, can stay soft for a while then. but 2k wouldn't be bothered.
Very unlikely to cause a reaction on 2k, 2k's very unreactive, unless still very fresh maybe. Your common 'base & clear' / COB are 1k over 2k, with 2k clear.
One remote possibily though does happen - was a 2k paint squirted 'straight', without hardener... It'll superficially 'dry', kinda sorta, but never harden. Needs to come off and be re-done mixed properly...
