I have just purchased a 1.9 tdi avant (1994)
It seems to get on average around 30-35 mpg rather than 50-55.
Are there any common causes for this? (aside from poor driving)
Thanks, Gav.

I'd start by giving it a basic service, chuck some diesel injection cleaner in the tank and changing of fuel and air filters should be the first ports of call. Even with poor driving you should be seeing low 40s. I have the same car and even when really wellied it's still pretty good.

A good service (especially the air filter IME) will transform a derv in how it behaves/MPG etc. My old 306 did high 30s around town before. I sold it with it doing around 46MPG (mixed driving, where it would previously scrape 40).
