After getting back from RRG11, I was full of inspiration both for finishing my current projects, and for getting another one - some kind of track car. Much was talked about over the weekend as we sat on the bank watching the cars blast up the hill. My criteria was pretty loose - it had to be cheap, manual and make reasonable power but aside from that I was open to most things. A few weeks later, I spied an ideal candidate on this here forum, and a few PMs later it was mine! It may look familiar to some... ;D Me and my bro borrowed a trailer and set off 100 miles to Castle Pollitt, to relieve him of this "hateful car" (his words). It does have a problem, which seems to be related to the automatic gearbox. No matter, because last night I snagged this on eBay for beer money... ^ Mercedes Cosworth 2.3-16 dogleg gearbox. With a bit of work it should marry up to the M111 engine. In theory. ^ Engine should be sweet with only 28k miles on it. We managed a quick look around the car, and it seems ideal! It will be getting stripped, lowered and most probably painted. I'm hoping this is going to be a quick turnaround as I have the other Merc and the Bond to finish! Once I've gathered together the manual conversion parts I'll just hit it I think. I need to work out which flywheel I have to get - the M111 manuals all used dual-mass ones, which won't work for me because 1) I hate them, and 2) the input shaft of the Getrag is too long as the Cosworth had a solid flywheel.

Yeah I think I'll be needing his MB knowledge for this one! I was really after a W201, but this came up at the right time and the right price. It's only a 230 but still should be fun.
I can't find out whether the M111 and M102 have the same flywheel bolt pattern. I suspect they do but it's only a hunch. Also, I'll have to do something about the crank sensor as that will be needed for this engine.

Think I'll be watching this keenly - had similar thoughts about these myself - track action is a must and perhaps a bit of road rallying... guess the tracking the right flywheel will be the trick part

Looking forward to this one Dean, a quick weekend project or is it behind the paintjob on the bond and the V8 in the stacklight?
What rims are on the cards for this?
Rysz.

Can the W202 be as light as the W201?
I think Mosselmann used to sell a turbocharged turbokit for it. If you need some power.

Readers Rides moves fast these days, I had to dig down loads of pages to find my thread! ;D Thanks for all the replies, I'm not sure exactly what my plans are for this one, but the end result is going to be a bare-bones trackday car. It won't be all that quick (thanks for the engine suggestions ettore and Mike! I'll keep them in mind) but it will hopefully be fun. Yesterday I had the day free to spend on the Benz, and I brought a battery along to see if I could get the car to start. After hooking up the battery it sprang into life at the first attempt (as expected really). After a bit of a hoon around in the car to see how fast it was see if we could get the gearbox fault to show up, it didn't so I parked it up again and started with some weight saving. At 1365 kg she ain't the lightest of lasses, but Mercedes rammed these cars full of all sorts of heavy gear that won't be needed any longer, so it all has to come out... ^ That's a fair old pile... ^ No minicabbing for me... ^ Nice clean floors! This is the first time I've ever removed the carpet of one of my cars without the grim feeling of what I'm about to uncover. ^ The front seats have come out and will make nice workshop chairs. Some buckets are in the pipeline... I went to Newark Autojumble today and got a decent haul of goodies for this car. Next time I have some free time I'll be fitting some of it. There's still loads more weight to come out of the interior - door cards, electric window mechanisms etc, etc. And as a bonus, some of the stuff that's coming out will be recycled and used in the Bond or the other Merc! The car sits higher on the springs now as there's less weight in it - this will be rectified soon with the aid of an angle grinder. Jamie BigPerm has been a great help - it was his W202 that inspired me to do a track car, although I had planned to get something different to him! Still, I'll hopefully come out with a different looking car at the end of it all. I still need to get hold of the important stuff like the manual 'box conversion bits, but I'm looking.

Good work! Your gearbox fault is probably a faulty speed sensor but it could be a knackered TCU. I don't know if Chris told you but do any lights come on the dash when it gets stuck in first? Doesn't really matter I guess as it's getting ripped out

Thanks fellas! I'm enjoying this project and the pile of trim bits is growing!
Spent a bit more time on it today - no photos as it's just more of the same really - the doorcards are gone now, and the electric window motors etc will be next, as they weigh loads!
I'm considering getting a manual C-Class as a donor vehicle as I'll probably save money in the long run over buying bits individually. These things love to rust so I'm hopeful I can pick up an MOT failure pretty cheap. I'm scanning the usual places!

it amazes me the amount of weight that can be removed from cars , I managed just under 200kilo on my 911 , and thats not going mental with it , makes so much difference on track , need to diet myself now

I haven't had a lot of time to do much on this car (or any other!) but last Sunday me and my bro took a trip to Wales to see BigPerm, to buy this... ...it's the remains of a C280 Brabus. Originally I was going to buy a manual 'box and a few other bits, but after a few PM's and texts I ended up buying the car! ;D It's missing the engine, interior, body kit and original Brabus wheels but it still has plenty of useful bits that I need for mine, plus there's a manual gearbox, solid flywheel, gearshift linkage and diff from a C180 stuffed in the boot. ;D I've not had time to do anything but pick it up, but next weekend I intend to spend some decent spanner-time on it! It was great to see Jamie again and talk turkey about racing C-Classes!

I've always like the idea of this sort of thing. I'm not a fan of modern Mercs but they must be great fun to strip the weight out of, it's a shame you haven't weighed it all to keep a track of your diet. I would like a biggish rwd barge to strip and have fun with.
