basically i started with a rusty capri bonnet. sprayed it with water, the used 400grit on a da, then wiped off the curse word. i bunged thinners in the gun and shook it and sprayed it out. then i set the gun to 65ishpsi, filled with barcoat and sprayed it. then bunged some thinners in and cleaned it (one of the side thingys/holes had blocked). close up. ;D anyway, ive got no runs. however its a bit rough. this is normal though yeah? and it just needs sanding down?

barcoat goes on a bit rough anyway. You are recommended to use a self levelling spray putty over it (I've just used high build primer and been OK though). You aren;t supposed to sand barcoat.
Spits are probably either:
partially clogged gun (sounds likely from whatyou said) moisture in the line (common on hot, humid days unless youhave a good water trap) poorly mixed paint. possibly dodgy air regulator at an outside chance.

I should imagine the rough finish is due to 65psi gun pressure Especially in these temps it`ll be virtually dry before it hits the panel, try 35-40psi and see the difference ;D

dunno barcoat needs a lot of air behind it.
Another thing to check is the fluid tip on the gun.Barcoat needs like a 1.8 or 2.0 and most HP general duty guns are like 1.4 or 1.6

tis a 1.4. the tin said 1.4-1.8mm iirc and 50-70psi. how would results from; 1.4mm, 50 psi 1.4mm, 70 psi 1.8mm, 50 psi 1.8mm, 70 psi compare to each other?

Hmmmm... I thought it needed a bigger tip than that. Fair enough, should be OK then.
The thing with pressure is: not enough and the paint goes on goopy and dry rough because its not atomised propery. Too much pressure and it goes rough because it hits the panel too fast and the paint is over atomised and this means it can dry before it hits the panel.

Pressure is not as important as VOLUME. If the compressor is running continuosly while spraying and struggling to keep up ,you don't have enough Volume of air being supplied to the gun to maintain the pressure you are using.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Never heard of barcoat? Is this fillr primer or barier coat??
When shooting thinner to clean your gun try holding a clean rag over the nozzle of your gun and put some preasure on for about half the cup. I allway shoot two cups of thinners with the preasure up and choke up the jet as your spraying on the second cup.
A thinner coat will help with orange peel.......
Looks good.

barcoat is an inert barrier material you spray on unthinned so that the random selection of unknown paint types and finishes on the car don't react with what you are putting on it.
Yeah, volume is important! IIRC Dave has a fairly large workshop compressor though so he should be OK on that score.

the compressers huge. you could fit a dog in there quite easily. anyway, when you press the trigger the gauge on the regulator goes down. do i want it to read the Xpsi with it spraying everywhere or when its not being spryed. I'm guessing trigger down. ta.
