Long story, but does anyone know which formula Avon 315-660-13 (rear), and 245-640-13 (front) are used in. And what do those figures relate to? They are similar size to current F1 tyres.

If they are Avons and similar size to F1 tyres, they are probably going to be hillclimb or sprint tyres (for use on the top-class ex-F1/F3000 cars or Goulds). The numbers are the sizes of the tyres (similar to road tyres) - they are for 13 inch rims. The rears are 315mm wide (12.5in) with a nominal diameter of 660mm (26in). The fronts are 245mm wide (9.5in) with a nominal diameter of 640mm (25in). The actual fitted diameter will probably end up being different, depending on what width rims they are going on and the inflation pressure. For Avon Motorsport tyres there should also be a 4 or 5 figure number somewhere on the sidewall - this is the Specification Number, which specifies what compound they are, the sidewall stiffness (i.e. load rating) and so on. Unfortunately there is no easy way of decoding this (unless you have notes from ordering tyres in the past), so you would need to contact Avon ( www.avonracing.com/contact_page.htm ) or BTMR ( www.bmtr.co.uk/contact.htm ) and they should be able to tell you based on the code. The other thing the Specification Number does is identify the rotation direction of the tyre (which is different depending on if it's being used for FWD, RWD and 4WD applications). No connection with the trade, but I've spent a fair bit of time wandering around paddocks  Edit: I have managed to find a reference for your rears at least - if they have a Specification Number of '11505', they would be A11 compound, which is medium (see this table www.bmtr.co.uk/compounds.htm ), usually for circuit racing use. If they are hillclimb/sprint tyres they would more likely be soft (A15 or A91) or super soft (A89). I couldn't tell you what the Specification Number they would translate to though. Edit2: One other thing I forgot - your tyres have metric dimension markings, which means they are radials. if they had imperial dimensions it would mean they were crossplies. |

I'm not 100% on this, but I also believe that the width of a slick is measured across the actual tread area, where as a road tyre is measured across the whole tyre, so a 315 slick is wider than a 315 road tyre.
