Ok so I've decided maybe it doesnt have one and adopting traditional diagnosis methods- no obvious spark (bearing in mind i'm looking at it in the daylight thru a windscreeen) I'm assuming if I had an inertia switch I'd still get a spark? :/ Just to check if you are looking through the windscreen the spark plug is earthed right. Otherwise it wont spark anyway. Get a mate to crank it over and hold the spark plug so that the metal part is touching the engine block. Spark should be fat and blue.

I don't recall the AX 1l having the fuel cut of it was a later Saxo and 106 thing mainly. I'd check the fuel relay should be under the ecu iirc. Its is fuel injected version isnt it? yea single point - silly question but how do i check if the relay is working? :/

What specifically are the symptoms?
Does the engine turn over, but not start? Is the engine dead (i.e. doesn't turn over)? Does it try to start but not catch?

its not getting fuel. am now getting a spark. getting voltage at the fuel relay which disappears when cranked over, no voltage reaching fuel pump - gonna try replacing the relay if not I assume it must be a wiring fault? :/

You could try 'shorting' the relay plugin point out briefly to see if the car will start with the fuel pump running, but caution is recommended.
*I may have done the above on an XR3i (a car known for killing fuel relays...)*

found the problem - corroded wire where it passes into the inner wing - so totally unrelated to anything I'd done!! and now I've had enough of auto-electrics to last me a lifetime lol
